Nickelodeon’s new animated series, created by native New Yorker Billy Lopez (Team Umizoomi, Peg & Cat, 3rd & Bird) and executive-produced by Michael Pecoriello (Yu-Gi-Oh!), revolves around the oddball denizens of a New York City apartment building called The Wayne.

To celebrate the debut of Welcome to the Wayne, Lopez and Pecoriello recently answered a few questions for The New York Post about their new series!:

NYP: Where did you grow up in New York City?

Lopez: The Village.

NYP: Did you live in an apartment building? If so, did you fantasize as a kid about weird stuff that could be going on in the building?

Lopez: I did grow up in apartment buildings, and would often use them as a backdrop for fantasy. I grew up reading a lot of Stephen King, and The Shining gave me a lot of appreciation for the creepiness of an empty, dimly lit hallway.

NYP: Are the show’s characters based on family members? Friends? People who lived in your apartment building?

Lopez: Bits and pieces, though nothing too intentional.

NYP: There’s a healthy dose of humor in Welcome to the Wayne; does that help offset scenes which might be a little scary for kids? Is humor a prerequisite for this type of series?

Lopez: It’s important to me that the show be very joke-dense, but I don’t think of it as a counterbalance to the intensity of any of the action or suspense; that is, I want to feel we can get as exciting as we need to, but still be irreverent in the midst of it.

NYP: Kids can be even tougher critics than adults when it comes to their TV shows. Does that make you nervous?

Lopez: You’ve got to have a thick skin to be in this industry.

Pecoriello: Kids are really honest. I guess that’s why you might consider them “tougher critics.” So, yes, the fact that we’re about to find out what they really think of Welcome to the Wayne is a little nerve-wracking. But we’ve spent a lot of time, working closely with the kid experts at Nickelodeon, to make a show that kids will love and I’m feeling pretty optimistic.

NYP: How did your experience working in kids’ entertainment factor into shaping Welcome to the Wayne?

Lopez: I met just about all of the people who ended up helping and allowing me to create Welcome to the Wayne over the years I worked on other shows, such as Peg & Cat, Team Umizoomi and 3rd & Bird. Writing for preschoolers is different than writing for 6- to 11-year-olds, though, so it’s been fun writing and coming up with jokes for these older kids.

Pecoriello: Having spent the last 20 years creating content for kids, I’ve learned to look at the world through the eyes of a kid. That’s something that Nickelodeon and Welcome to the Wayne do really well. We always start with a situation that’s relatable to kids and tell stories from the perspective of our kid heroes. While kids and the things they’re into are always changing, there are some universals about being a kid that remain constant throughout time — going on adventures, hanging out with your best friends, and laughing … a lot. That’s Welcome to the Wayne in a nutshell.

Welcome to the Wayne follows the comedic adventures of three friends, Ansi Molina, Olly Timbers, and Saraline Timbers, as they aim to unlock the secrets of the Wayne. Each new investigation brings them face-to-face with new characters, creatures, and oddities, known as “Wayne Phenomena,” leading them closer to uncovering the truth about the weird things happening in their building.

In the series premiere, “Rise and Shine Sleepyhead,” Ansi, a new resident of the Wayne, must work with siblings Olly and Saraline to stop a rampaging threat deep within their home.

The Welcome to the Wayne voice cast includes: Alanna Ubach (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce) as Ansi, the anxious new kid in town; creator and co-executive producer Billy Lopez as Olly Timbers, the adventurous 10-year-old son of a toy maker and a military scientist, and lifelong resident of the Wayne; and Dana Steingold (Avenue Q musical) as Saraline Timbers, Olly’s responsible and more mature little sister.

Additional voice cast members include: Veronica Taylor (Pokémon) as The Spy from Apartment 8-I; Marc Thompson (Pokémon) as Masterson; and Robbie Sublett (The Good Wife) as Flowershirt; Dave Willis (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) as George the Doorman; Dana Snyder (The Thundermans) as Wendell Wasserman; Nikki M. James (BrainDead) as Julia Wiles; Carey Means (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) as Jonah Bishop; Harriett D. Foy (Collateral Beauty) as Clara Rhone; and Charnele Crick (Bocce Ballers) as Goodness.

Before the full-length series, Welcome to the Wayne was Nickelodeon’s first digital short-form series, which debuted on in 2014.
