Today sees the release of two Metal tie-in comic books. Dark Nights: Batman Who Laughs #1 written by James Tynion IV, drawn by Riley Rossmo, colours by Ivan Plascencia, letters by Tom Napolitano and edited by Dave Wielgosz, Rebecca Taylor and Eddie Berganza. And Justice League #33 written by Joshua Williamson, art by Tyler Kirkham and Mikel Janin, colours by Arif Prianto and Jeremy Cox, Letters by Richard Starkings and Jimmy Betancourt, and edited by Andrew Marino, Rebecca Taylor, Eddie Berganza and Brian Cunningham.

The Batman Who Laughs is the last of the Dark Knights books and the most anticipated, looking at the origin of the Joker-reworked Bruce Wayne, how he became the Judge Death-lookalike he has been through the series so far and where it’s all heading.

Hypertime was a storytelling device created by Grant Morrison and Mark Waid in 1999 and primarily used in Waid’s comic, The Flash, as well as the limited maxiseries, The Kingdom. It was an early attempt to restore the DC Multiverse, presenting it as a multitude of alternate realities that somehow diverge from the “main timestream” in one way or another and sometimes reconnect with the “main timestream” briefly.

It has had mention in DC Rebirth in Flash

Justice League

And being an active fighting force over in Detective Comics

But in Justice League #33 we get the definition for what it is now, and see it for the first time.

And it is clearly a conduit for the Dark Multiverse invasion of Earth Prime. And there are more Dark Knights out there to be chosen…

There’s a Batman merged with Lex Luthor? Could it be worse than the Batman merged with the Joker? After all, he does do this…

Which leads to this…

And the plan appears to weaponise Hypertime.  because there are lots more than just twisted versions of Batman out there… indeed, he’s always been the least powerful of them all…

If you have a sentient Dark Multiverse, and a Hypertime fighting back – is that sentient too?

The Batman Who Laughs #1 and Justice League #33 are published today from DC Comics.
