As Lucasfilm plots the future of its Star Wars universe, it’s important that the company finds directors it believes will help raise the bar when it comes to new movies. Given how directors for the Han Solo standalone movie, the upcoming Episode IX, and a still-unannounced standalone film have all been taken off of their projects at various states of development and production, Lucasfilm has no problem looking until it finds the right fit.

Could Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi be the right fit, though? On the surface, it certainly seems like it. Speaking to Newshub, Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy says she could see him joining the franchise.

“I would love for him to direct a Star Wars movie,” she says. “I think he has exactly the right sensibility. It was very exciting to see him step into the Marvel universe and do such an amazing job with Thor.”

Still, while Newshub says this is essentially an “informal offer,” it’s not nearly that simple. Lucasfilm has shown many times it wants directors whose visions align with the company’s. However, given that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is developing a brand new trilogy to follow Episode IX, it’s clear that the minds behind Star Wars are looking to try new things.

Perhaps that’s a place Waititi would fit in. He previously told Uproxx that, while seeing directors taken off of Lucasfilm projects makes him nervous, “I’m not an idiot. Who would actually say no to Star Wars?”

Given that the Star Wars franchise isn’t going to slow down anytime soon, it’s not impossible to think of Waititi sitting in a director’s chair somewhere down the line. If that happens, here’s hoping Lucasfilm lets him bring his storytelling sensibilities to the table. After all, his vision for Thor: Ragnarok not only drastically improved upon what people expect from a Thor movie, but also from the Avengers character himself.

Regardless of his potential involvement in the future of the franchise, Star Wars will keep on chugging along. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in theaters on December 15. As for the director himself, with a potential live-action adaptation of Akira and and a sequel to his comedy What We Do in the Shadows, he’s going to be a very busy man.
