The first New Mutants team were created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod in the 1982 Marvel Graphic Novel of the same name and subsequently featured in their own title from 1983 until 1991, changing cast members along the way, before being was relaunched as X-Force.
There have been a few iterations in the years since, and we have an upcoming movie (now delayed) including Magik, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Sunspot, Mirage and Cecilia Reyes.
And today we have a new New Mutants series, New Mutants: Dead Souls reuniting originals Magik, Karma and Wolfsbane, later recruiting Rictor and Boom-Boom and also Prodigy and Strong Guy, who all first appeared in New Mutants.
But while calling the comic book New Mutants feels apropos, it feels really weird when the characters call themselves that.
Because, well, none of them are New Mutants. X-Men Blue has the mutant population set to quadruple. They would be new mutants. But these guys? At this stage, they are really old mutants. It reminds me of seeing episodes of The New Schmoo from 1979 when they air it on Saturday mornings. It’s really not new… and it’s weird.
It’s also weird that Strong Guy didn’t take the piss over that exact point. It’s kinda what he does…
