Solo: A Star Wars Story – Phoebe Waller-Bridge Talks L3-37’s “Revenge” and Possibly Returning to the Role

There were a lot of fun things in Solo: A Star Wars Story but one of the best parts of was easily Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the droid L3-37. Unfortunately, and a running theme of the new droids in the spin-off movies, L3 didn’t make it to the final credits. Instead her AI was integrated to that of the Falcon itself. Waller-Bridge spoke to Vanity Fair and said that the ship, which seems like it’s sometimes misbehaves on purpose in the original trilogy, was L3’s revenge for breaking up the team.

“When the ship fucks up or the ship gets moody, that’s her going, ‘I know what you’ve done. I’m punishing you.’”

L3 was unique in that she wasn’t formed completely through motion capture like K-2SO in Rogue One or in a bulky suit like the original droids like C-3PO. Instead it was a combination of the two which is one of the reasons that L3 moves unlike any other droid in Star Wars.

“They were pretty keen on me not being like any of the other droids. So any time I tried to do something that was a bit more droid-like or a bit more robotic, everyone was like, ‘It’s way funnier and sillier if you do it how you’re doing it.’ I said, ‘I wasn’t doing anything. That’s just me.’ They’re like, ‘Yeah, it’s ridiculous. We love it.’”

Finally, droids are unique in the Star Wars universe in that they aren’t limited by the passage of time. L3 could come back in some capacity and Waller-Bridge says she’s up for it.

“That would be a scream. I can imagine she has quite the past. Who knows what these imaginations will come up with next? I could play L3 forever.”

At the moment we don’t know what the future holds for Star Wars movies. Aside from Episode IX due out next year and two trilogies in development we don’t have any solid information about what the future holds. Regardless it sounds like Waller-Bridge had a great time playing L3 and we can always use more sassy droids in Star Wars.

Summary: During an adventure into a dark criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future copilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion.

Solo: A Star Wars Story, directed by Ron Howard, stars Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, and Thandie Newton. It will be released on digital now and on DVD/Blu-ray on September 25th.

iFixit’s iPhone XS and XS Max teardown shows off the revamped batteries

Today is the official launch day for Apple’s latest iPhone XS and XS Max phones. And, as is practically a tradition, iFixit is ready with a full teardown to show off all the secrets inside Apple’s latest phones.

As expected, the new phones are pretty similar to last year’s iPhone X (the XS Max’s larger size notwithstanding), but there are a few tweaks and changes for the eagle-eyed observer to note between the two devices.

The biggest change is the battery. While last year’s iPhone X had two battery cells for a total charge of 2,716mAh, the iPhone XS has a single, L-shaped cell, with a slightly lower 2,659mAh capacity. (Apple claims that it’ll still offer slightly better battery life than the X does.)…

‘Birds of Prey’ Cast: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Justina Machado and More Testing for Roles

Birds of Prey Cast

Warner Bros. is on the lookout for their Birds of Prey cast, and they’re considering several exciting actresses for parts. A new report indicates Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Justina Machado and more have all tested for parts. Janelle Monae has also been mentioned, although it remains unclear if she tested for a part or not. More on the potential Birds of Prey cast below.

THR has the scoop on the prospective casting for the female-driven superhero film. Margot Robbie is returning to play Harley Quinn, with Cathy Yan directing a script from Christina Hodson. As previously reported, the flick will find Harley teaming with Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain and Detective Renee Montoya.

A Wrinkle in Time cast

Black Canary

For the role of Black Canary, aka Dinah Laurel Lance, Warner Bros. tested Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who appeared in A Wrinkle in Time and the fantastic Black Mirror episode “San Junipero” and Jurnee Smolett-Bell, an actress whose worked on the TV shows True Blood and Underground. THR adds that singer and actress Janelle Monae, who has had roles in Moonlight and Hidden Figures, is also in the running – but it’s not clear if she actually tested for the part.

Black Canary possesses a “canary cry” – a high-powered sonic scream that can shatter objects and knock people flat on their ass. All of these actresses are promising, although I’ll admit that it would be pretty damn cool if Janelle Monae ended up with this role.

mary elizabeth winstead

Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane)Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers) and Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror) have either tested or read for the part of Huntress, a vigilante. There are several different versions of Huntress in the comics. One – Helena Wayne – was the daughter of Batman and Catwoman. The modern Huntress – Helena Bertinelli – is the daughter of a mob boss. I’ll admit that of all these actresses, Winstead is the only one I’m familiar with. She’s also usually delivers a great performance.

justina machado

Renee Montoya

For the part of Gotham City cop Renee Montoya, Warners tested Justina Machado (One Day at a Time) and Roberta Colindrez (Love Dick). Montoya is a great character – she had a reoccurring role on the Batman animated series, and a prominent arc in the fantastic comic series Gotham Central.

Cassandra Cain

The other remaining part is Cassandra Cain, who is one of the more recent Batgirls. THR doesn’t mention a specific actress as having read for the character, but adds: “The studio is seeking to remold the character as a 12-year-old and is looking for an Asian actress for the part.”

Birds of Prey is set to begin filming in 2019.
