Facebook restricts ad targeting after anti-Semitism controversy

According to Bloomberg, Facebook has temporarily suspended the ability to allow advertisers to target people by education or employer, after an investigation by ProPublica found users could target ads using keywords like “Jew hater” or “Hitler did nothing wrong.”

Investigating Facebook’s ad system, ProPublica was able to target ads to categories like “Jew hater” and “how to burn Jews,” based on self-reported information in users’ fields under categories like field of study and job title. In many cases, those categories were suggested by Facebook’s automated system when typing words like “Jew” or “Hitler.” Although Facebook has taken proactive steps to combat hate groups on the platform, the company also admits that its AI continues to…

Philippe Starck on how bezel-less screens will be the end of phone design

It’s been a big week for phones with skinny bezels. The iPhone X was finally revealed, of course, featuring a design where almost the entire front of the phone is taken up by the screen. And one day earlier, Xiaomi announced the Mi Mix 2, its followup to the phone that was the first to put this kind of design in the spotlight last year.

I’ve been wondering, though. If this is the logical endpoint of phone design — where almost all you can see is the screen — how are companies and designers going to be able to differentiate their products in the future? How will they stand out?

Following the Mi Mix 2 launch event in Beijing this week, I put this question to legendary industrial designer and architect Philippe Starck, who worked with…

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 is now in stores

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 has officially arrived and is now available through carriers’ websites and in their physical stores. Some preorder customers already received their phone orders, but if you were waiting to actually check the device out in-person, now’s your chance.

Samsung is charging $929 for an unlocked version. However, if you’d rather finance a phone through your carrier, T-Mobile has the cheapest offer on the new device, though not my much. It costs $930, although the carrier is also offering it for a $210 down payment and $30 monthly installments with T-Mobile’s Equipment Installment Plan, or for $0 down and $39 a month for Jump on Demand customers. Your next best bet is AT&T, which is selling it for $949.99, or $31.67 for…

After CIA complaints, Harvard University disinvites Chelsea Manning as visiting fellow

A comically sycophantic outcome at Harvard.

Former CIA Acting Director Michael Morell earlier Thursday announced his resignation as a senior fellow at Harvard over its decision to invite Manning. Mike Pompeo, the agency’s current director, also canceled a speaking engagement there Thursday night.

“I now think that designating Chelsea Manning as a visiting fellow was a mistake, for which I accept responsibility,” Kennedy School Dean Douglas W. Elmendorf said in a statement posted on the university’s website early Friday

Manning: “The CIA determines what is said and is not taught at Harvard.”

The contrast between the two is striking: Morell is an advocate of torture and extrajudicial killings; Manning exposed them.

Spotify’s new iMessage app lets you share 30-second song previews with friends

If you’re a Spotify user (and an iPhone user), there have probably been countless times you’ve shared a song with a friend through iMessage. The share button is easy and intuitive enough on the Spotify app, but the action can only be done within Spotify, and not the other way around. On the receiving end, once your friend gets the link, they have to leave iMessage, open Spotify, and then listen to the full song. Now, you can share a song on Spotify without ever leaving iMessage, thanks to the quiet launch of Spotify’s new iMessage app, TechCrunch reports.

Unlike Apple Music’s iMessage app, where you can only pick from a selection of songs you’ve recently listened to, Spotify’s app allows users to search for any track within the Spotify…

We regret to inform you the Adorable Irma Cop is racist

Michael Hamill is a 28-year-old Gainesville police officer whose mug went viral just days ago during Hurricane Irma. Sadly, his Facebook is full of comments like “who knew that reading jewish jokes before I go to bed would not only make me feel better about myself but also help me to sleep” and “put them in an oven and deal with them the hitler way.”

He’s apparently still on duty while a “confidential” investigation is conducted, writes local reporter Deborah Strange. The viral mugshot does, at least, serve one useful purpose: if you’re a Jewish person in Gainesville, you now know one face in the thin brown line.

LiveXLive acquires Slacker Radio for $50 million

The online radio service Slacker Radio has been acquired by LiveXLive, a music streaming service focused on live music streaming, the company announced today. Slacker, which has been around since 2007, has radio stations curated by DJs (something Dash Radio does better), customizable radio stations based on your taste (something Pandora does better), and at one point sold portable music players (something Apple did better).

But you do get a free subscription to it if you buy a Tesla Model S or X, so that’s nice.

LiveXLive is — as the name says — focused on live music streaming, but the company hasn’t made a substantial impact in the streaming market yet, despite streaming performances by Rihanna, Katy Perry, Radiohead, Chance The…

Disney’s exclusive Club 33 to open in four new locations

A few years ago, I was invited for a bartending demo at 1901 Lounge, California’s Adventure Club 33 counterpart. It was cool but I still dream of knocking Club 33 off my bucket list.

Well, acccording to the Orlando Sentinel, my chances for getting in are increasing, though I will have to travel to Florida. The news outlet is reporting that four new “versions of the high-end establishment will open in each of the four WDW (Walt Disney World) theme parks by this fall.” Those four parks being the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Sentinel article continues:

Disney has not revealed the price structure for Florida’s Club 33s, although a spokeswoman says one fee will cover all four clubs. The “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” adage springs to mind.

Disney also has not shared where in the parks its new “limited membership clubs” will be or their themes. They might not mirror the California version; we’re not even sure that the ones in Florida will include restaurants.

Rare white giraffes spotted in Kenya

In early June, conservation rangers with the Hirola Conservation Program in Kenya first spotted a white female and baby giraffe. In early August, they were able to capture this footage of the elusive pair.

Like that translucent-shelled lobster that was recently pulled in, these giraffes are not albino but have a genetic condition called Leucism. That means they a partial loss of pigmentation in their skin cells. If you look closely, you can see a familiar, though faded, reticulation on the calf’s neck.

A blogger for Hirola writes:

In this very sighting, in Ishaqbini, there was a mother and a juvenile The communities within Ishaqbini have mixed reactions to the sighting of this leucistic giraffe and most of the elders report that they have never seen this before. ‘This is new to us” says bashir one of the community rangers who alerted us when they sighted the white giraffe. “I remember when I was a kid, we never saw them” he added. “It must be very recent and we are not sure what is causing it” he said.

How Walmart profits while pricing below cost

This video by YouTuber Alex Berman lays out how retailers like Walmart profit even when they are pricing goods, like milk and eggs, well below cost. It comes down to volume and convenience. If they get enough customers buying items with a high profit margin for convenience sake, they can afford to price many items below cost to lure them into the store.

One Video: White Mustang by Lana Del Rey

Every week, a slew of new music videos hits the web. Watching them at your desk is not time theft because you deserve it; think of it as a nice reward for surviving another work week. But what if you don’t have time to watch every video — maybe you have a deadline, a hungry pet, or other grown-up concerns. In consideration of your schedule, Lizzie and Kaitlyn bring you a series called One Video. Each week we’ll tell you “one video” you need to watch, why, and for how long.

This week’s video: “White Mustang” by Lana Del Rey

Lizzie: In writing this column, I’ve started to feel that every week the same music videos come out. Radiohead releases something morose, but like, sensitive, a pop star in a suit dances around a half-animated world,…
