Neverwinter: Undermountain Brings Iconic Dungeons & Dragons Campaign to Life

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/wp-content/uploads/M16_MonsterKeyArt.jpg

As we were designing an expansion for Neverwinter, we needed a huge space for players to progress to level 80 with a new cap increase. Where better to do so than in the biggest dungeon in the Forgotten Realms? With that idea in mind, Wizards of the Coast’s “Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage” book was our tome of choice for research and reference. By offering 23 different levels in the famed dungeon of Undermountain, this D&D Fifth Edition campaign book gave our team so many choices for location and story content, centered around the Mad Mage – Halster Blackcloak – and his vast creation.

It was actually very difficult to select only a few of the levels and monsters covered in the book, which prompted many brainstorm and pitch sessions amongst the team. Everyone spent these meetings advocating the pros and cons of their favorite dungeon environment, stories, and monsters in found in Undermountain. There’s so much great content in the Mad Mage’s dungeon that we wanted to bring to our players in Neverwinter – but not everything could make the cut. Ultimately, we needed five new zones for players to progress from level 70 to 80. Our bottom-line criteria for selecting the final zones were: technical viability, exciting story possibilities, and the roster of monsters which lurked in each respective zone.

Neverwinter: UndermountainNeverwinter: Undermountain

Firstly, we picked the Catacombs, as it is the actual first level of Undermountain, and a great starting point for the story with mostly humanoid enemies. From there, adventurers delve deeper down into the Twisted Caverns to get a change of scenery and a vastly different ecosystem of massive monsters. After that, players venture into Wyllowood, a magical forest inside of the mountain dungeon – yes, you read correctly, a forest… inside a mountain. Delving even deeper, players enter the Terminus level – a fiery cavern dotted with mithril mines and lava, ruled over by a fallen angel. For the final level of our Undermountain adventure, we selected Vanrakdoom, a dungeon level overtaken by the shadowfell and a shadow dragon. Our Environment team did an amazing job creating all new dungeon and caverns kits from which we built these zones, each of which has its own distinct appearance and monster group.

Speaking of monsters, a dungeon is just a hole in the ground without them. The Neverwinter team created more new monsters for this expansion than we have in any other release since launch. Players will encounter groups of mushroom-like Myconids, spider-herding Ettercaps, deadly Umber Hulks and enormous purple worms – just for starters. Ultimately adventurers will also face off against the apprentices of the Mad Mage, Arcturia and Trobriand. These monsters are of course guarding great treasures, which draws many adventurers into Undermountain – never to return to the surface.

While the Neverwinter team has worked very hard to bring a recreation of Undermountain into our game, the real maestro of Undermountain is Halaster Blackcloak. Following adventurers on their expedition, he can be seen popping in and out of the dungeon, summoning monsters, or just absentmindedly chatting to himself. Halaster has spent centuries trapped in his own dungeon domain, building and altering Undermountain, filling it with magic and monsters, treasures and traps.  The fact that Halaster continually tinkers and changes his dungeon was a key element in our team digging into Undermountain – where we’ve encountered so many possibilities, and so many more levels to explore in future content releases.

Neverwinter is available now as a free to play title for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox One. You can download it today from the Microsoft Store.

Citizens of Space Brings the Future of RPG Gameplay to Xbox One

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/wp-content/uploads/Talent-screenshot.jpg

The Earth is missing and it’s up to you, the Ambassador of Earth, to recruit Citizens from around the galaxy to aid you in your fight to get it back! For the development of Citizens of Space, we wanted to capture the same tone and humor of the previous game in the series, Citizens of Earth, while launching the gameplay of the series into the future to reflect the sci-fi setting of the new game. That’s why it includes a brand-new battle system and a ton of exciting new ways to interact with the huge, colorful, and humorous world.

Speaking of battles, even the most charismatic of Ambassadors can’t convince everyone solely with flowering words and diplomatic overtures. When all else fails and negotiations get hostile, it’s time to get your hands dirty with some good ol’ fashioned combat! Here are some things to keep in mind to give you the best fighting chance.

Citizens of SpaceCitizens of Space

Master the Minigames
Each Citizen has a couple of minigames for you to master to get the most out of their abilities. From timed button presses to reflex challenges, these quick interactive moments not only keep the action intense but allow you to squeeze every bit of power out of your abilities. Even enemies will give you a chance to defend against their attacks (how gracious of them!) through a quick defensive game.

Swap Early, Swap Often
Unlike most RPGs, your Citizens not in your active party are still ready to fight at a moment’s notice. While in your reserves, they’ll even regain energy, ensuring they can unleash their strongest abilities as soon as you swap them in. Make sure to utilize your delegatory powers to their fullest and put those citizens to work!

Citizens of SpaceCitizens of Space

Make Bureaucracy Work for You
Even though the ambassador doesn’t directly fight in battles, he can use his authority to interrupt battles at any time. Use these interruptions to use items, summon Citizens to turn the tide of battle, or implement policies to shift things into your favor.

Keep the Fight Going
If you finish a battle but are still hungry for more, not to worry! Chain battles together to take on more enemies and reap fantastic rewards.

Of course, the world of Citizens of Space isn’t just one bombastic combat. Each of the Citizens that you can recruit are regular, every day, working folks. Because of that, each one has a talent that you can utilize related to their day job. Each talent offers something unique, from adding new features to battles to exploring the world and even to adding new aesthetic features. Be sure to utilize them all to get the most out of Citizens of Space! Here are some examples awaiting you.

Citizens of SpaceCitizens of Space

Change Frequency of Random Battles with the Assistant’s Talent
This way, whether you feel like exploring or getting your hands dirty with combat, you always have options!

Create New Items with the Chemist’s Talent
Using the advanced science of futuristic chemistry, you can synthesize powerful new equipment for your Citizens out of from regular ol’ items that you find around the world!

Adjust Music to Your Liking
With the Composer’s talent, you can change the music wherever you are. And if you level up his talent enough, you can make those changes permanent to recreate the galaxy’s audio landscape to fit your vision!

Explore New Worlds
The Hacker will allow you to jack into cyberspace and explore a virtual world. And while you’re in there you can fight battles as the Hacker for a new twist on the battle experience!

Thanks for reading. You can pick up Citizens of Space today on the Microsoft Store for Xbox One for only $14.99.

Play, Watch, and Earn Epic Rewards in the New Overwatch Event, Baptiste’s Reunion Challenge

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Group up and dive in to earn epic cosmetic rewards inspired by the newest Overwatch hero. Baptiste’s Reunion Challenge gives you the chance to unlock rewards by racking up wins in Overwatch or tuning in to some of your favorite streamers. During this limited time event, you can earn a player icon, two sprays, and the epic Combat Medic Baptiste skin—in addition to regular weekly rewards!

But hurry! The Baptiste’s Reunion Challenge ends on July 1.

What You Left Behind

When you’re taking a break from playing Overwatch or checking out streams, be sure to spend a little time delving into Baptiste’s war-torn past by reading “What You Left Behind,” a new short story by Alyssa Wong. The inspiration behind each and every cosmetic reward that you’ll receive for participating in the Baptiste Reunion Challenge, the story follows Jean-Baptiste Augustin’s departure from Talon, choosing instead to use his medical talents to make a humanitarian difference for his community. But international criminal syndicates have a long memory for anyone who owes them a debt, and Baptiste’s past catches up to him. “What You Left Behind” is available, free for download right here.

Play Overwatch’s Newest Hero

If you haven’t had the chance to play Overwatch’s 30th hero, now’s your chance to suit up. A versatile combat medic who’s not afraid to dole out a few bullets between bandages, Baptiste wields an assortment of experimental devices and weaponry to keep allies alive and eliminate threats under fierce conditions. Baptiste works toward a better world, healing where he can and fighting when he must. He knows that he cannot undo his past—but making a difference today is what matters now.

No Second Chances

The fight for the future is just getting started, and Overwatch’s diverse cast of powerful heroes is already geared up and ready to go. Grab your favorite hero—whether that’s a tesla cannon-toting scientist from the moon, a beat-dropping battlefield DJ, or any of the other 28 heroes—and jump into the action. Baptiste’s Reunion Challenge is live right now, but you’d better hurry. The event will only be around for a limited time, so be sure to log in by July 1.

We’ll see you on the battlefield, heroes. And be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram for more news, updates, or memes.

Creating a Sanctuary in Jurassic World Evolution

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/wp-content/uploads/JWE_Claires_sanctuary_Albertosaurus_1.jpg

After the amazing reaction to the first Jurassic World Evolution story expansion – Secrets of Dr Wu – we knew we wanted to do more and give players new ways to experience the game. We knew we wanted to tell more stories, and we knew we wanted to try something new with Jurassic World Evolution’s gameplay. That’s how we decided to bring to life Claire Dearing’s vision of a new home for dinosaurs, and give you a whole new story-driven campaign to explore.

In our second major expansion, Jurassic World Evolution: Claire’s Sanctuary, we wanted to shift the focus of the gameplay away from running a commercial park to creating an environment where dinosaurs can truly thrive. Launching today on Microsoft Store for Xbox One, Jurassic World Evolution: Claire’s Sanctuary is an all-new game expansion that introduces two new maps, new campaign missions starring Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing, new gameplay mechanics, and new dinosaurs to Jurassic World Evolution.

Jurassic World Evolution: Claire’s Sanctuary is a ‘what if´ scenario picking up from the events of “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” Isla Nublar’s volcanic Mount Sibo is due to erupt at any moment, putting into motion a race against time to rescue the island’s dinosaurs and rehome them in a new facility on the island of Sanctuary. Claire Dearing will guide players through a new campaign featuring a range of missions across Isla Nublar and Sanctuary.

When you arrive on Nublar you’ll find the dinosaurs afflicted with an unknown illness, which must be researched and cured before they can be safely moved to Sanctuary. The focus is on welfare, not profit, and the dinosaurs you cure and rescue on Nublard are the dinosaurs you’ll take with you to Sanctuary.

We’re giving you more control over the welfare of your dinosaurs with Jurassic World Evolution’s new paleobotany system. For the first time you’ll be able to delve into the specific needs of each herbivore by providing tailored food sources that can be researched and then grown in the new Greenhouse facility. Feeding the herbivores in the park authentic and beneficial plants will give prestige and lifespan bonuses, rewarding you for prioritising dinosaur welfare.

Once operations on Sanctuary have been established, the new Jurassic Tour building can be used to create custom tours using the new truck vehicle that include dynamic audio tours based upon your enclosures. You can use the tour to get up close to the new dinosaurs: the tyrannosaur-like Albertosaurus, the stocky and armoured Euoplocephalus and the gentle Ouranosaurus.
