Arcen Games Announces AI War 2 Launching on Early Access

Arcen Games officially announced today that they have launched AI War 2 out on Steam’s Early Access for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. The RTS hybrid is the official sequel to the 2009 title, but it doesn’t appear to have a totally firm connection to the original as it seems to go off on its own path. We have more details for you below as you can snag it for $20 today.

credit//Arcen Games
AI War 2 is a grand strategy RTS hybrid against an overwhelming, inhuman enemy who has conquered the galaxy. The enemy has made only a single error: underestimating you. You must steal as much technology as you can, take enough territory to fortify your bases and launch your attacks. But every conquest you make turns the attention of the AI ever more in your direction… so choose your targets with care.
What’s New and What Are We Working On?
We still have a lot we want to add, and even more we want to polish, but the current version of AI War 2 is already vast:
  • Many optional factions, each with their own goals and strategy, creating a living galaxy.
  • Polished gameplay mechanics, representing everything learned from the original AI War: Fleet Command’s six expansions.
  • Redesigned UI, currently going through iterations.
  • Over 1700 lines of spoken dialogue from more than 25 actors, and more to come for the AI itself.
  • 1.5 hours of new music added to the 4.5 hour score included from the original AI War: Fleet Command.
  • A ton of map types, with a lot of sub-options to make them even more varied.
  • Crazy moddability, with many levers available in easily-accessible XML.
  • Multiplayer is temporarily disabled, but still being implemented.
  • Multithreading for modern performance, and a codebase that will not summon an elder god.

THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE #1
written by JOHN RIDLEY
art and cover by ALEX DOS DIAZ
variant cover by TBD

Academy Award-winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, Let It Fall) examines the mythology of the DC Universe in this compelling new miniseries that reframes iconic moments of DC history and charts a previously unexplored sociopolitical thread as seen through the prism of DC Super Heroes who come from traditionally disenfranchised groups.
This unique new series presents its story as prose by Ridley married with beautifully realized color illustrations from a selection of exciting illustrators and comics artists. Alex Dos Diaz provides art for #1, which follows the story of Jefferson Pierce, the man who will one day become Black Lightning, as he makes his way from being a young track star to a teacher and, ultimately, to his role as a hero.
Future issues focus on characters such as Karen and Mal Duncan, Tatsu Yamashiro and Renee Montoya.

Extensively researched and masterfully executed, THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE promises to be an experience unlike any other. You may think you know the history of the DC Universe…but the truth is far more complex. THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE isn’t about saving the world—it’s about having the strength to simply be who you are.

“This is the best Superman story I’ve ever written.” So says living legend Marv Wolfman, and when you’ve written hundreds of Superman stories as he has, it means a great deal. This gem of a tale—written and drawn from 2006-2009 for the SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL series—explodes from the DC archives as a triumphant tale of Clark Kent’s fateful first days in Metropolis, which were far from easy. His early failures almost ensured there would never be a hero called Superman. Powerful writing and stunning art combine to conjure an inspiring story that needed to be published, one you will never forget, from a pair of master storytellers.

Everlast is Producing Exclusive Street Fighter Fragrances

Have you ever been playing Street Fighter and thought to yourself “I’d like to smell like Sagot?” Everlast thinks you do as they’re releasing new fragrances. These are some exclusive sprays that are essentially cologne with the Street Fighter branding on the side, presenting in boxing gloves made to look like they’re from the game. We have descriptions of them below as they’ll go on pre-sale today for about $130 out of their Portugal distributor.

credit//Everlast

The idea behind the partnership is to play with the characteristics of the game, as the variants of the perfume refer to two combats between characters of “good” and “evil”. Everlast’s famous gloves bring the characters Ryu, Ken, Sagat and Balrog as protagonists, who will be challenged by Chun-Li and Cammy. Each product’s name refers to the series of commands done at the joystick to perform Ryu and Ken’s special moves in the game (Hadouken and Shoryuken), and will be split into two important fights.

The Hadouken perfume comes in red, and will be represented by the fight between Ryu (Japan) and Sagat (Thailand). In this fight, the winner will be challenged by Chun-Li, a female character who represents China. The Shoryuken fragrance, in steel-grey color, brings the confrontation between Americans Ken and Balrog. The winner from this dispute will be challenged by Cammy. The Brazilian touch can be seen in the seal of authenticity, represented with Blanka, a Brazilian character.

“We are thrilled to bring this game story to the fragrances. The Street Fighter franchise has a rich content that reaches a very diverse audience, which gives us the confidence that it will have a great acceptance both by the geek public and by the perfumery lovers“, comments Olindo Junior, Marketing Director for RR Perfumes and Água de Cheiro.

Indie MEGABOOTH Opens Submissions for GDC and PAX East 2019

One of the biggest booths you’ll see on the convention circuit these days is the Indie MEGABOOTH, where you can see board and video games from indie developers. The organizers for that area have officially announced today that they’re taking submissions for GDC 2019 in San Francisco and PAX East 2019 in Boston, both of which are high-profile venues that could make a developer’s dreams come true by being seen by major publishers or just getting the buzz out about a game. Below are some of the details they put out about both conventions, and you can apply to be a part of them here.

credit//Indie MEGABOOTH

GDC – the largest and most prestigious game dev industry conference – is scheduled to take place March 18 – March 22, 2019 in San Francisco. As with previous GDC showcases, IMB organizers strive to provide an intimate setting where attendees can take a break from sessions to play innovative games from up-and-comers in the indie games scene. IMB’s GDC showcase will feature 24 games total, with 12 titles showcasing on Monday and Tuesday of the conference, and then Wednesday through Friday a fresh batch of games from 12 other indie teams will be available.

PAX East 2019 will return to the Boston Convention Center and is tentatively scheduled for March 28 – March 31, 2019 (Follow PAX on Twitter to find out the dates when they’re officially announced). IMB will host its usual MEGABOOTH, MINIBOOTH, and TABLETOP areas which will highlight indie games from around the world. IMB’s PAX East 2018 lineup featured 100 indie games from 21 countries.

The Indie MEGABOOTH is a curated traveling showcase working to bring indie games to the forefront of the gaming community and event-goers’ minds. IMB aspires to give indie dev teams exposure to new audiences by creating a network for exhibiting developers and creative communities to support each other while also connecting them with fans, publishers, platforms, and individuals in mutually beneficial partnerships.

Dark Horse, that company that puts out all the video game comics, has announced a new comic set in the world of the Ubisoft video game Tom Clancy’s The Division: Extremis Malis. Destiny 2’s Festival of the Lost Event Starts Tomorrow

Activision and Bungie are rolling out Destiny 2‘s second annual Festival of the Lost Halloween event when the game resets tomorrow morning. This year’s festivities will be themed after the events of Destiny 2: Forsaken, which will include some memorial bits for the dearly departed fan-favorite Hunter Vanguard, Cayde-6.

The event typically comes with a new series of emotes, vanity items, and quests in the spirit of the holiday. As you can see above, we’ve got strange, strange gear coming our way with this one. Should be interesting to see how many players rock that rooster head for months after this one.

The official description for this year’s Festival is below:

Morale in the Tower is low after the fall of a legend: Cayde-6. This year, death has not passed us, it has come to stay. More than ever, it’s important to remember loved ones who have fallen, and to celebrate the fact that we have lived to fight on in their honor. Every Guardian is invited to experience the masquerade.

Festival of the Lost begins on Tuesday October 16th at 10 AM Pacific, and concludes on Tuesday November 6th at 10 AM Pacific.

You can check out the Festival of the Lost trailer below.

Hearthstone Confirms Balance Changes Rolling Out This Week

credit//Blizzard Entertainment

Last week, Blizzard teased a few balance changes that would be coming to Hearthstone in a future patch, and the Hearthstone team has taken to their blog today to give the full details on the upcoming changes. As far as major balance patches go, the update affects only three cards, but they will have some interesting repercussions on the existing game meta.

The following balance changes will be hitting Hearthstone on Thursday, October 18th:

  • Giggling Inventor – Will cost 7 mana. (Up from 5)
    • Giggling Inventor is one of the most powerful and popular cards we’ve ever created. There’s virtually no downside to including it in a deck, and because it’s neutral, it’s played in almost every deck. We think it’s important to take risks when making powerful cards, especially when it comes to neutral taunts, given the role they can play in encouraging minion interactions and making games more interesting. However, Giggling Inventor has stepped beyond its intended role, and we don’t feel that it should be as effective as it currently is.
    • We initially tested this card at (6) mana in both the current Standard format as well as with cards that will be released in the future. Ultimately, we felt that its power level was still higher than is appropriate for a Neutral card with no build-around requirements. At (7) mana, we expect Giggling Inventor will find its way into fewer decks in general—and be much less effective in Quest Rogue—while remaining situationally playable within specific deck archetypes, such as Evolve Shaman.
  • Mana Wyrm – Will cost 2 mana. (Up from 1)
    • Over time, we’ve been moving away from powerful, early-game 1-drops like Mana Wyrm. It can often feel like the outcome of a game is decided by whether Mana Wyrm was played on turn one, and if it could be removed quickly by an opponent. Mana Wyrm has also steered us away from making powerful low-cost Mage spells. We’d like Mana Wyrm to remain an option for decks it synergizes with, while preventing it from being a huge turn one threat.
    • At (2) mana, it will be easier to deal with Mana Wyrm the turn it’s played, and it will be harder to buff it with cheap spells early in the match. We still expect it to remain an option in decks that have a heavy focus on cheap spells, but it should be a less appealing option in decks that aren’t built with that focus in mind.
  • Aviana – Will cost 10 mana. (Up from 9)
    • Changing Aviana to (10) mana means it will no longer be possible to play Aviana and Kun the Forgotten King on the same turn without some additional help from cards like Innervate or The Coin. It also means Juicy Psychmelon will no longer draw both Aviana and Kun. This should make the combos Aviana and Kun produce less consistent, while still allowing decks that use the combos to exist for the players that enjoy playing them.

Back From the Dead? Marvel Confirms Cyclops on the Cover of Uncanny X-Men #11

Earlier today, Marvel X-Editor Jordan White posted ten mystery sneak peeks at upcoming X-Men comics, asking readers to guess which comic they were from and who drew them, in celebration of the most important of weekly comic-book holidays, X-Men Monday. One of those images featured the head of deceased X-Men leader Cyclops, recently revealed in a scientific poll to be the most popular X-Man.

At New York Comic Con, Marvel revealed that Uncanny X-Men will get an annual in 2019, and that annual featured Cyclops prominently on the cover. Though that didn’t confirm that the adult Cyclops is finally returning, as fans have long demanded since his senseless killing as part of Marvel’s agenda to make the Inhumans a thing because Fox owned the X-Men movie rights, now White has confirmed that the image with Cyclops is part of the cover for Uncanny X-Men #11.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Can there be any doubt that Cyclops, long treated as a pariah by the X-Offices and mischaracterized as a villain by misguided creators, is finally going to return to prominence during the X-Men Disassembled storyline? We can only hope so, but at this point, failing to deliver on all this teasing would be a risky move with potential to besmirch the long-awaited return of the book.

We’ll find out if Cyclops is really coming back in a few months, or earlier if Marvel decides to spoil it in the New York Times.

Poznan Game Arena 2018 Reports a New Attendee Record

Poznan Game Arena and Games Industry Conference was held this weekend, with a new attendance record for attendees at both halves of the trade show. 76,199 fans from all over Europe made it to the Arena this year to check out games in 11 separate pavillions including three pavillions dedicated to the GIC conference.

Unlike some of the larger game events, very little gets announced at PGA, but it is a great opportunity for gamers to get their hands on new games. After all, many of the games playable at PGA are about to launch or just released, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, and even Diablo III: Eternal Collection on the Switch.

Additionally, the show hosted the first ever Central and Easter European Game Awards (CEEGA) gala as well as Pawel Lewandowski, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, who spoke with Polish entrepreneurs operating in the gaming industry about their needs and vision development. There’s quite a bit of hope that the political hype involved will help boost the Polish indie game scene.

So, essentially, it was a pretty good year for PGA.

You can find the results of the first CEEGA awards here.

Destiny 2 Glitch Could Confirm Next Expansion Location

A glitch in Destiny 2 has seemingly suggested the next major location guardians are going.

Destiny 2

Destiny 2 feels like it is in a really solid spot right now. Forsaken has really breathed new life into the game and the balance of things to do, stuff to grind for and reward feels exceptionally balanced. We are set to have some smaller DLCs dropped on us slowly throughout the next year that are focused less on story and more on giving players stuff to do. Where we are headed next in the next major story expansion has been a topic of hot debate for some time though.

Well, it seems Bungie might have confirmed this, albeit by accident. Currently in Destiny 2 (via Polygon), if you load into a friend who is doing an adventure on Titan, you load into a bizarre screen. It shows your ship flying as normal, but instead of showing the normal Titan loading screen, it shows your ship flying through Saturn’s rings. As many of you will know, that is where Oryx’s old digs, the Dreadnaught, is currently located. The screen isn’t quite finished, with the lighting and cropping being weird, seemingly confirming that we shouldn’t be seeing this yet.

More than that though, as you load into Titan, you hear the Destiny Taken King musical sting, heaping on the speculation that we are headed back to the massive spaceship next. The location had been rumoured for a long while with it also appearing on the supposed visual roadmap that plays at the end of the base game’s campaign. However, it’s nice to have even more evidence.

You can check out the glitch in this video from xHoundishx.

The real question now is, when could we expect the space to come in? Will it be one of the three upcoming DLC or next year’s major Destiny content drop? The DLCs are meant to be less about new spaces and story and more about providing more reasons to play so this might be too big a drop for those. At the same time, it feels weird for a loading screen to be hidden in the game nearly a full year before it is meant to be used. We will have to be patient for now it would seem.

Castle of Horror: Halloween 6 Brought ‘Halloween’ Continuity To Mind-Bending Precipice

We continue our Halloween Retrospective, focusing on the strangest continuity of the Halloween franchise, with Halloween: The Curse of Michael Meyers AKA Halloween 6 or Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers.

The movie features the screen debut of Paul Rudd— who gives a truly odd performance as the obsessed Tommy Doyle–  and the final screen performance of Donald Pleasence, who once again portrays the equally-obsessed Sam Loomis. We are barreling towards this month’s release of the 2018 reboot Halloween, which we’ll have an episode on later this month.

Charmed Season 1 ‘Pilot’ Review: A Strong Start That Honors, Updates Original Series

Welcome to Bleeding Cool’s weekly review of CW‘s Charmed, as we take a look at the series premiere of Jane the Virgin creator-showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman’s reboot of the popular series.

To say that the series has had a bit of a polarizing effect among the geek community when it was first announced would be a righteous understatement. But now that all of the bad press releases, pissy back-and-forths, and pre-judging are over – Bleeding Cool finally got a chance to actually watch the episode.

Guess what? It’s good. Not great, but a solid start with tons of season-long potential. It has some things to smooth out…but a little “tough love” for fans of the original Charmed who are having issues dealing with this series? It’s a better pilot than the original’s, and does the three things we needed it to do: introduced characters we want to give a crap about, gave us a solid backstory, and teased some serious nastiness to come.

Spoiler Warning: I’ll be covering some themes and takeaways involving major and minor plot points from the episode, so just keep that in mind. Definitely not looking for pitchforks and torches outside my apartment.

Charmed s01e01 ‘Pilot’: After the tragic death of Mel (Melonie Diaz) and Maggie’s (Sarah Jeffery) mother, the sisters struggle with moving forward but face another huge shock when they learn they have an older sister, Macy (Madeleine Mantock). With the emotions of all three sisters running high, each of the girls suddenly exhibit impossible new abilities: Mel can freeze time, Maggie starts hearing others’ thoughts and Macy has telekinetic powers. While trying to understand their new powers, Harry Greenwood (Rupert Evans), gathers the sisters and reveals they’re actually powerful witches, as was their mother. He also lets them in on a little secret, he’s not really a professor, he’s their “Whitelighter,” a witch’s advisor and guide. The sisters must make the decision to accept their new destiny as The Charmed Ones…and their new duty to protect humankind from the demons that walk among us…one of whom killed their mother. Ellen Tamaki and Ser’Darius Blain also star. Brad Siberling directed the episode written by Jessica O’Toole & Amy Rardin

Here’s a sneak preview of next week’s episode of the CW’s Charmed, ‘Let This Mother Out’:

Charmed s01e02 ‘Let This Mother Out’: After getting a message from the spirit board to not trust Harry (Rupert Evans), the sisters are conflicted and ultimately concoct a plan to see if he is telling the truth. Desperate to believe the person warning them is trying to protect them, they end up going against their better judgement. Harry soon realizes that the sisters are up to no good and tries to help before it’s too late. Meanwhile, this new sisterly unit is not fully unified, with Mel (Melonie Diaz) and Macy (Madeleine Mantock) struggling with who’s the real big sister and Maggie (Sarah Jeffery) caught in the middle. Vanessa Parise directed the episode written by Jessica O’Toole & Amy Rardin

“Stronger together.” That’s what Marisol tells her daughters, firebrand social justice warrior Melanie “Mel” Vera, and her sister, fun-loving Maggie, about their family. Mel is a graduate student in the women’s studies department her mother heads at Hilltowne University; Maggie is a freshman considering rushing a sorority (to Mel’s amused dismay) and going “on” again with her on-again off-again boyfriend Brian. But then, a shocking tragedy shatters their world and threatens their sibling bond: Marisol dies in a horrifying accident. Or was it?

Three months later, we find Mel unable to accept the official explanation of their mother’s death, while Maggie accuses her of being morbidly obsessed. And then, another huge shock shows up at their front door: they have an older sister, brilliant geneticist Macy, whom their mother kept a secret all these years! Macy is new in town and doesn’t know a soul (except for Galvin, the cute fellow scientist who’s been showing her around). Macy is eager to connect with Mel and Maggie, but Mel can’t handle another shock, and shuts her out. With the emotions of all three sisters running high, each of the girls suddenly exhibit impossible new abilities: Mel can freeze time, Maggie starts hearing others’ thoughts, and Macy has telekinetic powers.

But don’t worry, there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation…or so says Harry Greenwood (who as far as they know is the officious new chair of the women’s studies department), when he gathers the three sisters together to reveal they’re actually powerful witches, as was their mother. And he’s not really a professor, he’s their “Whitelighter,” a witch’s advisor and guide! Not only that, but Mel was right: their mother’s death was no accident – she was murdered by unknown dark forces.

It’s a lot to take in, but ultimately the sisters accept their new destiny as The Charmed Ones…and their new duty to protect humankind from the demons that walk among us…one of whom killed their mother. With the Power of Three, they are stronger together… even if they have no idea what they’re really up against.

Undertaker OGN Reveals Why Knox County Mayor Kane Set Fire to Home [Spoilers]

Following up on news that they’d sent 20-page excerpts of their upcoming Undertaker original graphic novel to 2 million WWE Network subscribers, explosive comic book publisher BOOM! Studios continues to aggressively market the book with a preview containing some pretty big spoilers, and even bigger accusations. As all WWE fans know, Undertaker’s parents were killed in a fire when the Undertaker was a child. Conflicting accounts of the fire’s origin have existed for decades. According to the Undertaker’s former manager, Paul Bearer, the Undertaker himself lit the fire, both killing his parents and permanently disfiguring Undertaker’s half-brother and current mayor of Knox County, TN, Kane. However, Undertaker later blamed Kane for the fire, calling him a pyromaniac, though he later did admit to setting the fire himself. Making matters more confusing, Kane, who long wore a mask to hide his disfigurement, was later revealed to be perfectly healed underneath the mask.

However, in this new preview of Undertaker: Rise of the Deadman, presumably the same one that was sent to WWE Network subscribers, we learn that it actually was Kane who set the fire, though it seems the truth of the circumstances is more nuanced than anybody could have thought. The comic shows that Kane set the fire to save his older brother from their abusive father, not because of pyromania. Further, it seems to be respect and admiration for his older brother that drove Kane to play with matches in the first place.

Check out the preview below.

First Details on Elite Dangerous: Beyond- Chapter Four Revealed

Frontier Developments has released the first look at the largest update to Elite Dangerous for the year. Elite Dangerous: Beyond – Chapter Four comes with significant changes to the exploration, mining, and multiplayer systems in the game. The new features and upgrades will be completely free for every Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous: Horizons player on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

The changes coming to the game include:

Exploration

A new Analysis Mode, with the improved Exploration Discovery Scanner and Detailed Discovery Scanner, is a game-changing, brand new way for all Commanders to explore the galaxy. After an initial scan of the system, players will then be able to tune their scanners to find stellar bodies and other phenomena. Unidentified Signal Sources and conflict zones will also appear, allowing players to easily track down interesting or important things within the system. Not only is this new system a more realistic, satisfying and engaging exploration experience, but also provides players with the freedom to make more informed decisions on where to look next, and be ultimately better rewarded for time spent exploring. Commanders will now have probes that can be arced onto planetary surfaces, and planetary rings, to map them in detail, locate points of interest and leave their mark on the galaxy in a new way.

Mining

Asteroid belts and planetary rings are about to get very busy. New tools and mechanics will provide a fresh, exciting and lucrative mining experience for all Elite Dangerous Commanders. Using new exploration mechanics, miners can investigate rings to locate the best spots to start their mining sessions. With the right amount of skill and expertise, Commanders can create an awesome asteroid detonation before sweeping up the spoils.

Squadrons

Squadrons is a new way of uniting like-minded Commanders in Elite Dangerous. Players will be able to take part in Community Goals together and compete for top spots, and bragging rights, in weekly leaderboards. New communication tools such as in-game chat channels and a new web portal, give players the freedom to manage their Squadron and collectively blaze their trail across the galaxy.

More

Rockstar Devs Reportedly Working 100 Hour Weeks on Red Dead Redemption 2

credit//Rockstar Games

According to several reports, Rockstar Games’ developers have been working 100-hour weeks several times in 2018 in order to get Red Dead Redemption 2 out on time. Now, this isn’t the first time Rockstar devs have put in absurd hours. They’ve done it for many of their major games, including the original Red Dead Redemption.

GamesIndustry.biz has published a report about the situation at Rockstar which includes testimony from both Dan and Sam Houser. That testimony directly refutes the official Rockstar Games take on how the development process is going, which naturally makes it something of a controversy.

GamesIndustry.biz reports:

Dan Houser said that the team has been “working 100-hour weeks” several times in 2018, later adding that compared to previous Rockstar projects, “This was the hardest.”

His brother Sam told the site earlier this year: “We’ve poured everything we have into [Red Dead Redemption 2]. We have really pushed ourselves as hard as we can.”

The result is a game that Dan claims is 65 hours long (although five hours of content have actually been cut) and boast 300,000 animations, 500,000 lines of dialogue recorded by 700 voice actors, and even more lines of code.

The level of detail seen in the trailers, and the glowing previews, suggest this work has paid off but it brings to mind the Rockstar Spouse incident around the original Red Dead Redemption.

Back in 2010, just a few months before the game launched, an open letter allegedly written on behalf of the wives of Rockstar San Diego employees claimed the team was expected to work 60-hour weeks – 12-hour days, including Saturdays – or they would face disciplinary action.

Rockstar later attributed this to “people taking the opinions of a few anonymous posters on message boards as fact.”

Rockstar went on the record to clarify their statement, but the social media backlash has already begun. Dan Houser got on the record with IGN to insist the long hours were only being pulled by his writing team:

Houser clarified his comments, saying the 100-hour work weeks sentiment was explicitly about his writing team, which included himself, Mike Unsworth, Rupert Humphries, and Lazlow Jones.

As if the fact that only the writers are working 100 hour weeks is somehow okay. Now, social media is often used to reinforce labor standards and regulations and that is arguably one of the best uses of social platforms ever. So, naturally games Twitter is a bit of a hot place right now. With all the recent shakeups in the game dev industry, reports that Rockstar has been working its devs to the bone have people aflutter.

To save you the inevitable google search, here are some highlights of Twitter’s hottakes on the Rockstar situation:

The Writer of Invictus Pens Graphic Novel, Mandela and the General

Once upon a time, Nelson Mandela was a terrorist. Then he was a symbol for passive resistance. Then an icon of peace and reconciliation.

Not everyone saw this change in perception as a consistent and, between his release and the first elections of universal suffrage in South Africa, there was a fear of civil war breaking out. But Mandela was a master at stratagems and was playing all sides. And a new comic book by the screenwriter of Invictus, John Carlin and artist Oriol Malet, looks at just one of those relationships.

Between Mandela and General Constand Viljoen, former chief of apartheid South Africa’s military, and leader of a right-wing party, the Afrikaner People’s Front, opposed to Mandela’s African National Congress. The comic book Mandela And The General tells the story of their secret meetings, in the hopes of keeping their followers and radical fringe elements from acts of violence, despite the advice of those politically closest to them, with the aim of putting aside their differences for the good of the country.

Viljoen is credited by some with making overtures which helped lead to white South Africans’ acceptance of universal suffrage and free elections, as with a speech to the Broederbond annual assembly, saying of the black South Africans in his army, “If they can fight for South Africa, then they can vote for South Africa!”

In November, Plough Publishing will tell the full story. And they have a few quotes they’d like to share which we will run with some artwork from the book.

“A simply wonderful book.Mándela and the General suspensefully reveals how Mandela’s spirit of reconciliation prevailed over fear and violence in post-apartheid South Africa.  John Carlin’s privileged access makes this an especially exciting read. Coming out as it does at a time of gathering global intolerance, this book is a timely reminder of the value of human empathy as a tool in political confrontation.” — Jon Lee Anderson, author of Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life

“John Carlin elegantly crafts a powerful, balanced narrative well served by the evocative imagery and sequential talents of Oriol Malet. Mandela and the General is an important read for all who seek peace.” — Andrew Aydin, co-writer of the National Book Award-winning March

“A riveting read. Carlin ‘gets’ Mandela. He captures powerfully Mandela’s political astuteness and vast generosity. Masterful storytelling!” — Academy Award-winner Morgan Freeman

“Incredibly engaging and well worth your time. The art by Oriol Malet has so much energy and beauty that it drew me in immediately.” — Jamal Igle, illustrator of Black, creator of Molly Danger

“Fascinating.” — Kirkus Reviews

“Wonderful, accessible distillation of the genius of Mandela. In an increasingly divided political landscape, should be required reading for people of all ages everywhere.” — Academy Award-winner Matt Damon

“At the core of Mandela and the General is the notion that reason and empathy are the foundations of progress and peace.” — Vita Ayala, writer of The Wilds and Livewire

“Excellent…a well-told, perceptive view of both sides in the conflict.” — Foreword Reviews

“Malet’s visuals capture Carlin’s intense narrative in shades of gold, blue, red, and black, mixing photographic details with looser images and breaking panel borders to underscore immediacy. His multihued maps of the African continent are especially affecting.” —  Booklist

“A must read for US Americans in our current era of cultural conflict – Mandela and the General reminds us of what can be achieved when we view each other as human.” — Kwanza Osajyefo, co-writer of Black
