Following Switch’s Splatoon 2 Release, The Series Will Receive An Online Anime Series

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Despite being one of Nintendo’s newest franchise, Splatoon has already become one of its most popular, particularly in Japan. The Inklings have gone on to star in their own manga series, and Squid Sisters Callie and Marie even held a live concert at the Japanese gaming event Niconico Tokaigi last year. Now, an anime inspired by the franchise is set to premiere next month.

The Japanese magazine CoroCoro has announced it will be airing a Splatoon anime on its YouTube channel (via Japanese Nintendo). The animated adaptation will be based on CoroCoro’s monthly manga series, which follows a team of Blue Inklings as they take part in Turf Wars against other teams. The anime premieres on August 12.

Splatoon 2‘s first Splatfest event took place this weekend and saw Team Ice Cream defeat Team Cake in the debut competition. It also provided us with a glimpse at the game’s distinctly Nintendo-style warning, which appears to people who repeatedly disconnect during online matches. Other details about the game were revealed in a recent Nintendo Direct broadcast.

Splatoon 2 releases exclusively for Nintendo Switch this week, on July 21. The Nintendo Switch Online mobile app will roll out alongside it and allow players to voice chat with friends and view a stat-tracking service called SplatNet 2. GameSpot will have a full review of Splatoon 2 tomorrow.

Nintendo Switch Adding Two Great Party Game Compilations

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

The Nintendo Switch is a fantastic local multiplayer console, and Nintendo has positioned it as a good platform for party games. It’s not too surprising, then, that Jackbox Games has revealed that two of its party game compilations, Jackbox Party Pack 1 and 2, are coming to Switch.

The studio announced the ports on its Facebook page, but it provided little more information. Jackbox Games hasn’t stated when the packs will be released or how much they’ll cost, although they’re currently $25 each on Steam.

Jackbox Party Pack 1 includes You Don’t Know Jack, Fibbage XL, Drawful, Word Spud, and Lie Swatter; the second pack features Fibbage 2, Earwax, Bidiots, Quiplash, and Bomb Corp. Personally, I’m particularly fond of Fibbage and Drawful, but Quiplash is great if you like to stream games and can get a big audience to play along.

The studio actually launched Jackbox Party Pack 3 on Switch earlier this year. It is also currently working on a fourth pack for release this fall, although it hasn’t announced platforms for it yet. You can read more about the games coming in Jackbox Party Pack 4 here.

Destiny Devs Talk Call Of Duty 4 Inspiration, Letting Experts Carry Other Players

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Destiny is a game built on gameplay loops–players are meant to play the same activities and missions again and again to master them and level up. Certain missions in Destiny particularly emphasized this loop, such as the secret mission to get the Black Spindle sniper rifle. In the latest episode of Bungie’s podcast, Bungie developers talked about how special missions like that come to be and how the lessons they learned from making them are carrying over to Destiny 2.

In the podcast, designer Rob Engeln talked about how the Black Spindle quest was developed. It arose from Engeln’s appreciation of difficult levels which present short, but intense, obstacles for players, and which require a high level of familiarity and mastery to complete. In fact, the Black Spindle level was specifically influenced by a much earlier example of this type of mission: the Mile High Club mission in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Engeln, who helped design the Black Spindle mission, said in the podcast that he drew inspiration from the way that players would memorize each second of Mile High Club. The Black Spindle mission is an offshoot of the Lost to Light level in Destiny: The Taken King’s main story campaign. To unlock the alternate path, you have to speedrun through the level; after entering the other path, you have 10 minutes to kill every enemy that appears. Successfully finishing the level in time unlocks the Exotic Black Spindle sniper rifle.

“The big inspiration for me was actually watching a bunch of videos of people speedrunning Mile High Club from Modern Warfare on Veteran difficulty,” he said. “What I liked about that was that constant sense of mastery where… you could see them anticipating exactly where every enemy would be. They had a script basically that they were following.”

“The key thing that made that work really well was that it was on a timer,” he continued. “You were trying to bulldoze as quickly as possible.”

Mile High Club is notorious for being punishing and requiring dozens of repetitions to complete on the hardest difficulty. It’s unlocked once you complete Modern Warfare’s campaign, and a successful playthrough takes only 1-2 minutes. You can see GameSpot attempt to finish the level in the video below.

The developers also discussed how this design philosophy–focusing on mastery–has fed into Bungie’s work on Destiny 2. The game is meant to emphasize similar gameplay loops, while also encouraging what Bungie calls “carry culture.” Bungie hopes that high-level, experienced players will be able to carry lower-leveled players through some of the most difficult, end-game content.

“We saw [carry culture] with Spindle, we saw it with Trials [of Osiris],” Engeln said. “Destiny could be a game where some of these really high-skilled players can take other people who aren’t necessarily up to the challenge on their own along, bring them through it, and give them a really cool reward that’s also a memory. That’s something that’s really valuable to us, and when we were talking about what do we want the ritual game in Destiny 2 to look like, preserving that carry culture was one of the things that [game director] Luke [Smith] told me mattered most to him.”

“It leads to a community of folks who are, in many ways, helpful,” Smith added. “You’re creating alliances and allies, even if it’s just for a night.”

Destiny 2 is getting a beta test very soon: it opens to those who’ve preordered the game on July 18 for PS4 and July 19 for Xbox One. Everyone else can jump in starting July 21. The beta runs through July 23. A beta for PC players is also coming in late August. You can read about what’s included in the beta here.

Destiny 2 launches in full on September 6 for consoles and on October 24 for PC. Among other things, the game will feature a social space that’ll evolve over time and a new Raid that’s “unlike anything we’ve done,” according to Bungie. In addition, it’ll feature a lot more story than the first game.

Live-Action Movie Of Classic Animated Show Robotech Might Have A Director

https://static.gamespot.com/uploads/original/1557/15576725/3261296-robotech.jpg

A live-action movie based on the classic ’80s animated series Robotech has been in development for a long time, but it now seems that it might actually happen. It has been reported that Andy Muschietti, director of the upcoming Stephen King adaptation It, is in line to helm a Robotech film.

No Caption Provided

According to Variety, Muschietti has signed on to develop the movie at Sony, alongside his producing partner (and sister) Barbara Muschietti. The director made an impact with the Guillermo Del Toro-produced horror Mama, and there is much anticipation for It, which arrives in September.

Robotech was an American re-edit of three different Japanese anime shows–The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA. It premiered in 1985 and ran for 85 episodes. The show tells a multigenerational story in which a series of galactic wars are fought between a variety of alien invaders and mankind, which is using advanced mecha technology.

There were also several spinoffs, such as Robotech: The Movie, Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles, and Robotech: The Sentinels. There have also been a number of video games, including Robotech: The Macross Saga and Robotech: Invasion.

A live-action Robotech film was first reported in 2007, with Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire attached as producer at Warner. The project went through a variety of potential writers and directors, before ultimately being sold to Sony in 2015.

New Yo-Kai Watch 2 Version Coming This Fall

https://static.gamespot.com/uploads/original/1577/15776161/3261294-ps_3ds_yokaiwatch2_psychicspecters_ukv.jpg

There’s a new version of Yo-kai Watch 2 coming to North America and Europe this fall. Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters includes the core game, plus all the content from the Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls versions. It also includes new quests, locations to explore, and the ability to befriend Wicked Yo-kai, which have been purely enemies up until now.

The 3DS game has been available in Japan since December 2014. The exact release is still unknown, but Nintendo says players in North America and Europe will be able to play it later this year. Here’s what’s new in Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters:

  • 12 new quests, including one that delves into the origins of the mysterious Darknyan
  • Ability to befriend 15 Wicked Yo-kai
  • New locations to explore, including the Gera-Gera Resort
  • An expanded version of the Yo-kai Watch Blasters local co-op mode, with new bosses to defeat
No Caption Provided

If you already own Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls, there’s an extra bonus for you. Nintendo says players with save data from the previous versions can access new dungeons, fight new bosses, and befriend exclusive Yo-kai. It’s unclear what extras having saves from both versions gets you (if anything).

Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters is available for pre-order now for $40. For more on Yo-kai Watch 2, check out our updated review featuring details about the two previous expanded versions.
