Skyrim Expansion Mod ‘Lordbound’ Shows Off Environments In New Trailer

Started back in 2015, Lordbound is a mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that adds new locations and quests to the already sprawling game. Scheduled to come out sometime in 2018, the team behind it released a new trailer this weekend showing off some of the new locations players will be able to visit.

DLC-sized mod is touting 15-30 hours of extra content consisting of new quests to undertake and dungeons to explore, as well as three non-linear faction storylines. It all takes place in the Druadach Valley, a new location not in Skyrim proper that sits between the titular province and High Rock. According to the mod’s synopsis, the story follows events in the region as the Imperial Legion fight with Orc factions in order to try and reclaim the area. The Fortress of Garshakur will be a main focal point as will its ruler, Chief Gorek, who the player will no doubt come into contention with as the fan-written plot progresses. If those proper nouns don’t convince you, the luscious environments revealed in the mod’s latest trailer might.

I struggle with Bethesda RPGs. I’ve yet to find a particular sidequest or dialogue choice that really pulled me in and stayed with me years later and the appeal of swinging a sword in first person continues to allude me. The stunning beauty of its open world has never been lost on me though, and Lordbound appears to have captured that same naturalistic boundlessness in all of its new locations. Some of the dungeons in particular look to have a fair bit more personality than even what made it into the main game.

Skyrim’s a game that never ceases to die, despite having come out in 2011. While Bethesda has been busy remastering it and porting it to every console it can, including most recently the Nintendo Switch, modders have been hard at work doing just about everything else imaginable. Some projects include trying to remake earlier games in the series within the Skyrim engine while others have added new modes or higher graphical detail.

And then there are mods like Lordbound that try to add entire subplots. We’ve covered many of these in the past, including Enderal, Falskaar, and Bruma all add giant new areas and quests. Like Lordbound though, they all require fans to invest a lot of their free time and energy in order to complete and distribute them for free (although donations from the community are often accepted). So as Lordbound pushes for a 2018 release, the people behind it are also still looking for volunteers to help with all of the work involved.

You can read more about the mod and follow its development progress over at Mod DB.

GI JOE… Which Way Now for the Comics?

Hector Bala writes,

In a March 2017 interview with the LA Times, Simon Waters, Hasbro Senior VP commented, “The world has changed, and I think you’re going to see G.I. Joe changing with it.” He added, “There’s going to be a much more contemporary approach to the whole franchise, and that will allow us to develop different characters.”

This is the stick and rudder IDW needs for the direction of the comic book GI JOE franchise. The world has changed and IDW has all of the elements it needs to move the franchise into the future. With over 15 years of war, audiences and readers have become more sophisticated. The 1980’s Joes fighting with laser beams and cheesy battlecry is a thing of the past, as is the deployment of America’s premier Tier 1 fighting force against dinosaurs and other supernatural threats. Readers don’t read GI Joe for science fiction, they read it for guns, bullets, bombs, and Americana. They read it to see the Joes fight terrorists in the form of Cobra which is bent on world domination. Chuck Dixon’s work on GI Joe: Special Missions presented a much more grounded Joe world which was in line with what the country has been experiencing since 9/11. Having any new Joe titles land somewhere between Dixon’s Joes and Nathan Edmonson’s The Activity would be optimum.

Grounding the Joes and using real-world events as an analog for political and military-themed storylines is the way to go. This is essentially what Marvel did with the X-Men when they couched the issue of civil rights in a fictional world with the two opposing leaders, Magneto and Prof. Charles Xavier as surrogates for Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Massaging the Joes to tackle various threats with a more contemporary approach would likely appeal to more sophisticated readers who are primarily adults.

There is another opportunity for IDW here. There are many military occupational specialities (MOS) and units that do not have a GI Joe character on the roster. This presents a real opportunity for IDW to create some new and exciting characters to add to the team, instead of just reusing the same core group of characters like Snake Eyes, Scarlett, Roadblock, Shipwreck, etc. By new characters, we don’t mean throwaways like Big Lob, Captain Grid Iron, Salvo, or Banzai either. Let’s see some real badasses. There are second and third order benefits to moving in this direction. This injection of new Joe blood is exciting all on its own. It allows for the development of rich backstories and arcs with the pre-existing characters as mentors. Again, going back to the X-Men example, Marvel did this with Giant-Size X-Men #1, May 1975, with the introduction of new diverse team members including stalwarts like Storm, Colossus, and Nightcrawler. These characters rose to the highest levels of popularity without compromising the popularity of the original five X-Men; Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Angel, and Beast. In fact, some of these characters surpassed the originals in notoriety. Marvel also did this with The New Mutants. This affects Hasbro, as well, as it poses an opportunity for merchandising and sale of new action figures, and that means money. The introduction of new characters means more interest in the GI Joe Collectors Club exclusive offerings each year at the annual convention, again, primarily attended by adults.

In January 2016, US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced all MOS and positions would be open to women without exception, as long as they qualify and meet the standards required, of course. This means increased diversity for the team and not just relying on the Big 4 females in the Joe Universe, Scarlett, Lady Jaye, Covergirl, and Jinx. It would definitely be interesting to see some new women in the fight.

Racial and ethnic minority groups made up 40% of Defense Department active-duty military in 2015, up from 25% in 1990. Black people made up 17% of active-duty military, higher than their 13% share of the US population aged 18 to 44. The share of the active-duty force that is Hispanic has risen rapidly in recent decades. In 2015, 12% of all active-duty personnel were Hispanic, three times 1980’s share.

I am Puerto Rican and Dominican, an Afro-Latino.  I can tell you that the only two Hispanic Joes are: Hector Delgado – Shipwreck and Rafael Melendez – Zap. There are not many Asians aside from Quick Kick and Jinx which are boring characters, at least to me.  I was never a fan of the whole ninja angle with Joe’s as there are no ninjas in the military.  Besides, there are so many incredible jobs and units that do not have any Joes at all.

Let’s also consider that terrorism has many faces and for the Joes, that face is Cobra. Al-Qaeda isn’t the only terrorism show in town; ISIS, the KKK and a host of others are very prominent. Creating a new threat vector for the Joes in the form of a new terror organization would certainly breathe new life into the franchise. Cobra would still cause havoc but it wouldn’t be the only Big Baddie anymore…Again, this means more toys and merchandising. We’ve seen this time and time again. Spider-Man had the Green Goblin, until Venom came along. Superman had Lex Luthor, until Doomsday came along. Batman had the Joker, until Bane came along.

When Devil’s Due Publishing (DDP) held the GI Joe license to produce comics, DDP used a technical advisor to add gravitas to what would eventually land on the pulp. Sophisticated readership would surely appreciate more accurate panels on the page. Nathan Edmondson’s run on Marvel’s The Punisher was super accurate while remaining steeped in a fictional world of superheroes and super villains. This can be done while honoring the great Larry Hama’s vision.

Whatever direction IDW chooses to go, let’s hope they pursue stories with new characters involving direct action strikes, black market arms sales with Destro, Cobra plots to start proxy wars involving nation states…just please, anything but more ninjas….

Yo Joe!

Hulk Has a Beard In ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Concept Art, Nothing Will Ever Be The Same Again

Thor Ragnarok Concept Art Hulk

Folks, this might be the most explosive story I’ve ever written for this site. Once you read it, you will never be the same. According to some early concept art for Thor: Ragnarok, the Hulk almost had a beard. That’s right – the Incredible Hulk almost blessed us with some finely-groomed facial hair. And that’s not all: he had long hair, too. Could you even handle such a thing on the big screen? I don’t think you could. Behold the Thor Ragnarok concept art below.

Stop what you’re doing, lock all the doors, turn on all the lights, boil some water, and get ready to have your mind blown. We were this close to having Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok be adorned with facial hair, but alas, director Taika Waititi realized that such a decision would cause mass hysteria in theaters everywhere. For now, we’ll have to make due with this early concept art, depicting the big green guy with a big ole beard.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The concept art comes courtesy of Ryan Meinerding, Character Designer, Concept Artist and Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development. There are actually several different Hulk looks here, including one with shaggy hair, one with a bit of a buzzcut closer to the version that ended up in the final film, and one where Hulk has a mohawk. And of course, there’s the infamous beard/long haired photo, which makes Hulk look like a big, green Jesus.

How shook are you right now? Be honest – very shook, right? Thor: Ragnarok was a lot of fun, although I seemed to enjoy it a little bit less than everyone else. That said, if the film had featured a bearded Hulk, I might’ve given the film a much higher rating. Let this be a lesson to other Marvel directors: more beards. In fact, the internet is already going gaga over the prospect of bearded Captain America in Avengers: Infinity War. Why stop there? But beards on everyone in the MCU. Spider-Man should have a beard on the outside of his mask! Thanos should have a beard on the Infinity Gauntlet! Hell, they should go back and CGI a beard onto Stan Lee for every single cameo he’s made so far. Beards for everyone! What MCU character do you think needs a beard? Sound off in the comment section below, I promise I will read every single comment posted.

Thor: Ragnarok just recently wrapped up its successful theatrical run, which means a Blu-ray announcement will be imminent. There’s still time for Taika Waititi to go back and digitally add a beard onto the Hulk scenes. It’s not too late.

CW President Addresses the Supergirl / Legends Monday Night Swap

When it was announced that DC’s Legends of Tomorrow would be returning on February 12th in the Supergirl time slot, there were some worried fans and some speculation that this was fall out from the firing of executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. TVLine asked the CW’s president Mark Pedowitz about the scheduling while at the Television Critics Associations winter press tour today.

Supergirl

Pedowitz sites some production issues on the series that predated Kreisberg’s removal as the reason for the scheduling change. He also spoke of a fear of ‘overload’ with all five superhero shows airing concurrently once Black Lightning starts up on January 16th. They felt it was a good place to put Legends knowing that iZombie would follow it once Valor completed. He also likes the idea of Supergirl extending out of May sweeps, allowing the network more original programming into the summer.

He wanted to assure,  “The fans of Supergirl should not be worried in any way, shape or form. We are big believers in the show, and big believers in [series lead] Melissa [Benoist] and the direction of the show.”

Supergirl returns on Monday, January 15th and runs for four weeks until giving way to Legends of Tomorrow on February 12th. The Legends third season finale will air April 9th and the Supergirl will be back on April 16th and run until it’s season finale on June 18th.

Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst Makes Heartfelt Plea to Donald Trump

Life in 2018 sometimes makes us want to Break Stuff. It often seems like the Endless Slaughter of negativity, much of it coming from President Donald Trump’s own Twitter account, will Eat You Alive. The world has been Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin’ toward self-destruction for a long time now, maybe since 9 Teen 90 Nine, maybe even earlier, but definitely more noticeably since Trump was elected. But sometimes, if you Take a Look Around this Lonely World, The Truth is, you’ll find that It’ll Be Okay… you just gotta have Faith.

President Trump took to Twitter today to blast”Fake News CNN” reporter Jake Tapper after Tapper squared off against Trump advisor Stephen Miller in an interview. The president bullying his enemies on Twitter is certainly nothing new. We’ve all gotten used to it by now. What wasn’t expected, however, was that an unlikely hero would don his trademark red baseball cap — which doesn’t, by the way, call to Make America Great Again — and plead with the president to cease his terrible behavior and become a role model for the future.

That’s right. It’s Fred Durst to the rescue.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Though the Limp Bizkit frontman is probably the last person one would expect to jump into the political arena, it wouldn’t be unprecedented. Following Trump’s victory, Kid Rock spent months fanning the flames of rumors that he was planning a Senate campaign before eventually revealing it was a publicity stunt. Kid Rock’s cousin, The Rock, has also been flirting with a presidential run. But unlike the Rocks, Durst’s plea for civility from Trump seems more sincere. You can tell he didn’t just make that tweet for the Nookie. Come on. The Nookie. Come on. He really meant it.

Fred Durst may not be the hero the world deserves, nor is he necessarily the one we need right now, but he’s what we’ve got, so we had better make the best of it.

Anyone ready for 2019 yet?
