Small Homes

Don’t build a tiny home, build a small home. Fashionable tiny homes can be more aspirational than realistic. Ditto for large homes. A small home (400-1200 sqft) is the better size for most folks. In this book, shelter maven Lloyd Kahn collects home ideas for small homes that are built by the owners, or at least designed by the owners. The small size of the homes featured here encourage hand-made details that you could not complete in large home. Hand made everything is only one benefit of a small home; others include affordability, low ecological footprint, low maintenance, etc. The overall message in this gallery of hundreds of hand-built small homes is that small homes can be incredibly beautiful, adequately spacious, potentially affordable, and in most ways preferable to a large home. And that you — you the reader — should be able to build one yourself, with help. While you could build a tiny house, a small house offers many more advantages over tiny and few added downsides. The many hundreds of clear shots in these 220 color pages supply very practical solutions on how other small home makers have squeezed high quality living into a small space. Small is smart; small is beautiful.

Assassin’s Creed Anime Series Coming From Castlevania Showrunner Adi Shankar

Hollywood producer Adi Shankar (Dredd, Lone Survivor, The Voices, and more) today announced his next project–and it’s for one of the biggest franchises in gaming. The 32-year-old producer revealed that he’s working on an Assassin’s Creed anime series.

It is based on Ubisoft’s massively popular stealth-action franchise, but it will tell an entirely original story. There is no word as of yet regarding its title, premiere date, network, or cast. Ubisoft itself has yet to say if it is involved in the production.

Those details will come later down the road; it sounds like the project is still relatively early in the production process.

Shankar is a big fan of the Assassin’s Creed series, and he says he was floored to get the opportunity to work on the new Assassin’s Creed anime. “If anyone tells you not to follow your passion in life, they are wrong,” Ankar said.

“I played the first edition of Assassin’s Creed the year I moved to Los Angeles,” he added. “At that moment, I knew absolutely no one in the industry and could never have imagined that one day, Ubisoft would ask me to take the world of Assassin’s Creed and create an original anime story set in it as an anime series.”

He is the showrunner for the Castlevania Netflix series, which premieres this week, on July 7.

Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest on the new Assassin’s Creed anime.

In March this year, Assassin’s Creed head of content Aymar Azaizia confirmed that an Assassin’s Creed TV series was happening, but until we did not know much about it, if this is indeed the series in question. Last year, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said the company was in talks with Netflix for a series, but he did not say which Ubisoft property might be spun into a show. It’s possible Assassin’s Creed–one of Ubisoft’s biggest and most recognizable brands–is the franchise in question.

This year’s big Assassin’s Creed game, Assassin’s Creed Origins, comes out in October for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. A mobile game called Assassin’s Creed Rebellion is also on the way.

Here is Shankar’s full statement:

This won’t be the first time the Assassin’s Creed series has extended to circles beyond gaming. Fox produced a live-action Assassin’s Creed movie last year starring Michael Fassbender. The Justin Kurzel-directed film apparently made more than $240 million worldwide and is reportedly getting multiple sequels.

Nintendo Switch Could Get More Of Telltale’s Games After Minecraft

Telltale Games’ first Nintendo Switch game will be Minecraft: Story Mode Season 1 at some point in the future. But could the company bring more of its titles to the system? It sure sounds like it, according to Telltale head of communications Job Stauffer.

Minecraft: Story Mode Season 1 is heading to Switch, and it looks like Season 2 and more of Telltale’s franchises could show up on the hybrid console in due time.

No Caption Provided

“We haven’t quite announced [Minecraft: Story Mode Season 2 for Switch] but we certainly hope to continue things on that platform; we’re big fans,” Stauffer said.

He went on to talk about why the Switch could be the “perfect” home for Telltale’s games. “It wouldn’t be unheard if more of our series also made it to Switch; we love the platform. It’s kind of perfect for what we do,” he said. “All of our games are the same on mobile as they are on consoles. And for a mobile console [like the Switch] it’s pretty awesome.”

A release date for Minecraft: Story Mode Season 1 on Switch has not been announced as of yet. As for the other Telltale titles that could come to Switch, the developer has a big library of high-profile episodic franchises. Some of these include seasons of Game of Thrones, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Walking Dead, Batman, and The Wolf Among Us.

There is also the possibility that Telltale could bring its mysterious new IP to Switch. Intriguingly, Telltale has also said it is thinking about releasing on games beyond console, mobile, and PC, so it appears Switch may not be the only new platform it’s developing for.

Minecraft Story Mode Season 2 premieres in July for PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, and mobile devices.

Which of Telltale’s franchises would you like to see come to Nintendo Switch? Let us know in the comments below!

Nintendo Switch Getting RPG The Longest Five Minutes

The role-playing game The Longest Five Minutes is coming to Nintendo Switch. Publisher NIS America made the announcement during a panel at the Anime Expo today, according to DualShockers. The game was previously announced only for PC and PlayStation Vita.

The other piece of news announced during the panel was that The Longest Five Minutes is now coming in 2018, delayed from its previously announced 2017 release window.

The game was released in Japan last summer, only for PS Vita.

NIS America also confirmed that there will be a limited edition version of The Longest Five Minutes for Switch. The $55 bundle will come with the game, the soundtrack (feature two discs and a booklet containing game art), and four lapel pins. All of this comes inside of a collector’s edition box, DualShockers reported.

Here is the official description for The Longest Five Minutes:

“Our hero faces the origin of all evil, the Overlord himself, but suddenly loses all memories of his adventure. His finishing moves, the name of his hometown, and even the reason he’s trying to defeat the Overlord in the first place, all gone. Our hero tries to regain his priceless memories before it’s too late, but the Overlord stands before him, his power unyielding! What can happen in the The Longest Five Minutes!?”

PSN Experiencing Issues, It Seems

It looks like the PlayStation Network is experiencing some issues right now. The official PSN status page shows that basically all PSN services are running into problems currently.

This includes Account Management, Gaming And Social, PlayStation Now, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Vue, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Music. Affected platforms include all the big ones: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, PC, and mobile.

No Caption Provided

“Our engineers are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, and we thank you for your patience,” Sony said.

People on NeoGAF are saying that they are receiving notifications that this downtime could be related to maintenance.

It’s not immediately clear how widespread these issues are. As always, some people may experience issues while others don’t, and there could be many reasons for that.

We’ll update this post with new details as they become available. We would expect the issues to be sorted out relatively soon. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

Destiny 2 Director Teases A Raid That Is Unlike All The Past Ones

Destiny 2 game director Luke Smith has teased the upcoming shooter’s first raid. Raid 5, as it’s known only right now, will be set in a place that players “believe is real,” Smith said in a new interview with Mashable. He added that this raid, whatever form it takes, will be unlike the four that came before it.

“Raid 5, when we looked at it, it was about building a place you believe is real. That was our priority,” he said. “A place that you believe could exist. It’s unlike anything we’ve done. The team is incredibly talented; it is a joy to see them work.”

Destiny 1 had four raids: Vault of Glass, Crota’s End, Kings’ Fall, and Wrath of the Machine. Raid 5 sounds like it’s going in a new and exciting direction, and we’re eager to hear more about what’s in store.

In other Destiny 2 news, Smith wrote on Twitter recently that he is very excited to be playing a new build of the shooter at home. Really excited.

Destiny 2 launches on September 6 for PS4 and Xbox One, and on October 24 for PC. Players can play in a beta for the game starting on July 18 for PS4, July 19 for Xbox One, and in late August for PC. You can read about why the PC version is coming out after the console versions here. In addition, we had a chance to talk with Bungie at E3 2017, and you can read our interview here.

Recently, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said Destiny 1 didn’t release content fast enough to meet players’ expectations. To address this, Activision is bringing in more studios to work alongside Bungie on Destiny 2.

GTA 5 Online Players Find Secret Alien Mission, Here’s How To Unlock It Apparently [UPDATE]

[UPDATE] In a Reddit post (via PC Gamer), Team Guru outlined the “no shortcuts, no cheating, legit way” to access GTA Online’s alien mission.

To trigger the mission, you apparently have to complete 601 Gunrunning sales, and then begin a supply run between 21:00 and 23:00 for the in-game clock. “Yep, it really is that simple. But considering the amount of time it takes to do 600 sales means that this isn’t an easy thing to achieve,” reads a line from the Reddit post.

Additionally, the alien mission will reportedly only trigger once.

The original story is below.

GTA Online’s Gunrunning update, which was released in June, apparently contained clues about a secret alien mission, which modders have now unlocked and played. As Kotaku reports, the Gunrunning update’s code suggested that there might be a UFO crash site nearby the Zancudo military base. Now, the folks behind a modding group called Team Guru have found a way to unlock the mission, which you can see below.

As you can see, it’s not the most thrilling of missions. At least in the state it’s in now, the player comes upon a massive, crashed alien ship, with dead scientists in a swamp. There is an alien egg out in the open that the player acquires, at which point a few ETs spawn and must be dealt with. Then the player drives the egg to a bunker to finish the mission. Bear in mind that this mission, if it’s real at all, might not be finished, as it was discovered in the game’s code and before Rockstar made any mention of it.

“Much hard work, two weeks of sleepless nights, and years of research have gone into bringing this to you guys,” Team Guru said in a Reddit post. “What does this mean for the mystery?? Who knows, we still don’t have the undamaged ship being used, yet!!”

This isn’t the first time aliens are in GTA V. There is a sequence in GTA V’s single-player mode where Michael does drugs and sees aliens that he has to gun down with a huge chain gun. The new GTA Online alien mission could be the signal of grander plans.

The newest GTA Online is out now, adding a number of 4th of July-themed items, as well as a new mode and a number of discounts. For lots more on the update, check out GameSpot’s full breakdown of everything it comes with.

GTA V is one of the most successful games ever. Recently, the open-world game passed 80 million copies shipped, and it continues to sell well.

Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day for July 5, 2017 is:

flat-hat • \FLAT-hat\  • verb

: to fly low in an airplane in a reckless manner : hedgehop

Unable to resist the temptation to show off, the young pilot decreased altitude and flat-hatted over the county fairground.

“A tactical jet flying on an approved and appropriately scheduled Military Training Route is not flat-hatting. On the contrary, the crew is exercising facets of real-world, combat skill sets and should not be automatically assumed to be in violation of regulations.” — Lt. Matthew Bogue, Navy Times, 4 July 2005

Did you know?

Legend has it that the term flat-hat originated with an incident back in the days of barnstormers in which a pedestrian’s hat was crushed by a low-flying airplane. According to one version of the tale, the reckless pilot was subsequently required to purchase a new hat for the hapless pedestrian. It seems unlikely that such an event actually took place, but we can well imagine how fear of having one’s hat smashed flat by a passing airplane might have given rise to such a vivid verb. Flat-hat is first known to have appeared in English in 1940. Another word for flying low to the ground, the verb hedgehop, debuted at least 14 years earlier (and its related gerund hedgehopping is known to be a bit older still).

Lords Of The Fallen 2 Still Happening, But Maybe Not Soon–+ancient+labyrinth+1.jpg

A sequel to the Dark Souls-like game Lords of the Fallen is still happening, but developer CI Games has put only a “very small team” to work on the project, suggesting it might not come out anytime soon.

CI Games CEO Marek Tyminski told Eurogamer, “We definitely have that game in our plans and we definitely want to make this a great game. We’re very serious about Lords of the Fallen the sequel.”

No Caption Provided

He added that CI Games is not going “halfway” with the game. Giving the team the time it needs to make a good game is “the quality way” of moving forward, he said.

In 2015, Tyminski said CI Games was hoping to release Lords of the Fallen 2 in 2017, but that no longer appears to be the plan.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a couple of years away,” he told Eurogamer in the new interview. “We’ve been working quite a lot on Lords of the Fallen 2, we really did a lot. It’s really finding the best teams who can work on that game together, and when we have that setting, we pretty much know what we want to do.”

Also featured in the interview is Tomasz Gop, the producer for the first Lords of the Fallen game and the sequel before he stepped away in 2015. He has no left CI Games entirely, telling Eurogamer he was let go “because of a reduction in team, in scope, in budget, in business approach.” Gop is now working at Destructive Creations, the team behind the controversial shooter Hatred.

GameSpot’s 8/10 Lords of the Fallen review praised the game’s combat system and atmospheric worlds. Reviewer Kevin VanOrd also enjoyed its grotesque creature designs that helped hammer home the dark setting.

Lords of the Fallen sold hundreds of thousands of copies and was ultimately profitable. The game was co-developed by German studio Deck 13, which apparently is not contributing to the sequel.

CI Games also made Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3, a game that the studio said it made mistakes with as it attempted to “catch up with other AAA titles.”

Watch New Spider-Man: Homecoming Scene

Ahead of Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s release this week, Sony has published a four-minute clip from the superhero movie showing off “A Film By Peter Parker.” The cool clip shows what happened when Tony Stark/Iron Man came to New York to recruit Spider-Man for a fight against Captain America in Civil War. We see some of Spider-Man’s perspective during the airport battle in Germany, and then a lighter scene at the end.

The YouTube video below from (via Slashfilm) was originally published on the PlayStation Store.

Speaking to the PlayStation Blog, Homecoming director Jon Watts said the film does tell an origin story for Spider-Man, but it’s unlike the others that have come before it.

“It’s not the same moments of the origin story that we’ve seen before in other movies: we don’t see Uncle Ben die, we don’t see a spider bite,” he said. “But I think this is the beginning of Spider-Man, in a way. He’s still learning how to be a superhero. In a way, it is an origin story–just not one we’ve seen before.”

Also in the interview, Watts said it was important for him to have Spider-Man come across as “regular kid” in the new film.

“He has to be dealing with the same kinds of problems that a regular kid is dealing with,” Watts said. “We also have to know that Peter is smart, and learn about his home life. But ultimately, that’s what makes Spider-Man, Spider-Man: he’s just like you and me.”

The main villain in Homecoming is Vulture, who is played by Michael Keaton. Watts said he was drawn to Vulture as a villain for a number of reasons, one of which was that Vulture is one of the first villains that Spider-Man ever came to know.

“And two, because it really opens up the possibilities of some very cool action sequences,” Watts said. “A guy in a wingsuit fighting Spider-Man? [laughs] That was very attractive to me.”

Limbo, Inside Dev Co-Founder On Why He Left The Studio

Dino Patti, the co-founder of Inside and Limbo developer Playdead, left the Danish developer last summer amid a reported disagreement with other founder Arnt Jensen. Patti reportedly walked away with a $7 million package and has gone on to attach himself to an intriguing-looking indie game called Somerville.

Now, Patti has shared a little more insight into his departure from Playdead. Speaking to Eurogamer, Patti acknowledged some level of “fallout,” adding that Playdead still has a place in his heart and he is on speaking terms with almost everyone at the studio.

A scene from Inside
A scene from Inside

“There was some kind of fallout,” Patti said. “It is kind of delicate. It’s also combined with other personal reasons. I really like Playdead. It’s something that’s deep in my heart. I love the people there, they’re still my friends. I’m on speaking terms with 98 percent of the people there…”

“For me it was just time to do something else. I found a way to do it in a way where I could do whatever I wanted afterwards.”

You can read the full interview here at Eurogamer.

Patti is the executive producer for the new game Somerville, which is being developed by The Avengers movie animator Chris Olsen from a new studio, Jumpship, in Guildford, UK.
