The Best Cosplay From RTX 2018

RTX, Rooster Teeth’s big annual convention, was held in Austin earlier this month, and amidst the panels and live shows was some very good cosplay.

Here’s a selection of the best of it, thanks to Mineralblu, who was there taking pictures (and video) for us.

Blizzard, please make “Baby Bjorn Dad 76" an official skin, thank you.

The Week In Games: Monsters And Warfare

This week has some varied games, from JRPG throwbacks to MMO expansions, and as the summer goes on the releases are getting weirder and weirder.

I’m all about the classic game experience, and I’m very interested in the fact that we’re getting Bard’s Tale games alongside the classic Tanglewood and a purposeful throwback in Cosmic Star Heroine this week. It’s basically the summer of nostalgia, and I regret the fact that I definitely do no have time to play all of these games.

We’re also getting Wailing Heights for the PS4, a game that I’ve been eyeing for the PC for quite a while, so maybe I will finally get a jump start on that thing.

Of course, there’s stuff that many people have been waiting years for, from the new Battle For Azeroth expansion for World of Warcraft to the final season of Telltale’s Walking Dead franchise. I’m sure that big stuff is going to be happening there!

Of note as well is Keep Talking or Everyone Explodes coming to the Switch. I don’t know how that’s going to work, but making that game portable is a very, very smart move.

PUBG Player Nails Perfect Molotov Throw

A good shot in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds always makes you feel good, but the perfect use of a thrown weapon will almost bring a tear to your eye.

https://kinja.com/ajax/inset/iframe?id=youtube-video-wwds2FPQ5jI&start=0

YouTube user G44RA’s perfect throw is one for the ages. Sanhok, PUBG’s newest map, seems like it is designed to put you in awkward spots where a combination of hills, trees, and buildings means that you are doing running battles while searching for cover about 30% of the time.

The video shows a familiar situation for anyone who has been playing PUBG recently: there’s someone firing from a building, they’re hard to hit, and the only choice to make is whether to fight or run. The noble molotov user in the video chooses to fight, and it pays off.

I literally went “ohhhOHHHHHH” when the weapon threaded through the window, and it’s this kind of moment that makes PUBG a special game for me that really does transcend other battle royale games. It’s something to do with the slightly more tactical, more simulation-y aspects of the PUBG experience that makes this more interesting and exciting to me than shooting grenades out of a gun in Fortnite.

I salute you, thrown weapons expert, because I’m never going to do anything this cool.

The Battlefield 1 Community Is Torn Over A Mountain

Image: Monte Grappa

The Monte Grappa map in Battlefield 1 is a divisive experience. Based on a bloody, treacherous set of battles from the first World War, it is a hard map to take and hold objectives on. And now the Battlefield 1 community is embroiled in its own fight about the “real” Monte Grappa.

A few days ago, a Reddit user posted a picture of a mountain with the simple thread title of “Monte Grappa IRL.” As you can see below, it’s an idyllic mountain covered in green, and that’s in harsh contrast to the way that many players understand the Monte Grappa of their first-person shooter experiences.

Image: ilikepot

In the game, Monte Grappa is hard to assault, covered in trenches, and is generally just a jaw-gritting stressful experience. The difference between that experience and contemporary Monte Grappa as depicted in this photo is, to put it mildly, pretty big. This led people to wax philosophical about what it would mean to die there, with the top comment of the thread summarizing it quite nicely: “What a beautiful place, and morbid as this sounds, if there was a place I’d had to fight and die in, this is it.”

The catch, though, is that it isn’t Monte Grappa. A thread sleuth pointed out that it’s a picture of a mountain in Stoos, Switzerland that was originally posted on r/EarthPorn by a user named ilikepot. Apparently you can ski there! It’s also not chock full of the tragedy of war, or at least not the same kind that exists at Monte Grappa.

In fact, if you look up Monte Grappa on good old Wikipedia and plug the coordinates into Google Maps, you can see that the two mountains are a good 500 kilometers from each other. That’s pretty far!

Of course, being the internet, the false mountain claims were met with the truth. Reddit user DividingOcean3 showed a picture of the real Monte Grappa in response:

Or, well, wait. That might also be incorrect. In the midst of this, Dorjcal posted a real real photo of Monte Grappa, which is sort of idyllic.

Image: Dorjcal

But while that might be a picture of the mountain that is named Monte Grappa, it is not the location of the map in Battlefield 1 that is named “Monte Grappa.”

The Battle of Monte Grappa is a set of three battles, as I said before, but the map Monte Grappa is an emulation of the Battle of Vittorio Veneto, which is the last of those three battles of Monte Grappa. In a Reddit thread back in 2016, TheMightyRan made a strong case for the exact location that inspired the game map:

Image: TheMightyRan

It was user d1ea who went to Google Earth and pulled actual, true pictures of the location that inspired Monte Grappa to educate the public.

Image: d1ea

This, too, was challenged by DividingOcean3, who delivered what is “finally, the real Monte Grappa”:

This area is about a hundred kilometers north of the city of Vittorio Veneta, and it is well within the place where the final Italian offensive took place at the end of the Battle of Monte Grappa.

Even if the problem of fake images of Monte Grappa is “solved,” the community response to the confusion over what the mountain (or map area) actually looks like are comedy gold.

Is this the real Monte Grappa?

This?

I’m 90% sure this must be the actual Monte Grappa.

Ultimately, solved or not, the best distillation of the community reaction to the Monte Grappa debacle is in the form of a meme posted by smokingpolpot:

‘Shop Contest: Cowboys Go Everywhere

We’ve finally seen gameplay footage of Red Dead Redemption 2. Surprise, it’s got cowboys. Our ‘Shop Contest this week is all about figuring out where those cowboys go.

In the gameplay trailer for RDR2, it’s explained that the West encompassed all kinds of areas. Swamps and deserts, plains and mountains. My assumption is that if you point yourself in a direction, you’ll eventually wander off the game map. But where does the cowboy go when they leave the map?

Our ‘Shop Contest this week is all about showing where the cowboys go if they mosey just a little too far. As you can see above, it’s interesting to me that Tamriel is just a hop away from the map boundary. But it could be space. Or the Upper Aedirn. Or that stage where you fight the steak in Earthworm Jim 2. Anything is possible.

I’m including a handy .PNG of Cowboy McProtagonist from RDR2, but feel free to use anything from the trailer in your quest to put the cowboys in the places.

Next Saturday I will look at all the entries and choose a winner and some honorable mentions! Good ‘shopping to ya, the rest of the instructions are below. Y’all.

How To Upload Images — Instructions

1. Create your ‘Shop and save it to your desktop. Images must be at least 636 pixels wide.

2. Go to the bottom of this post

3. This brings up a comment window. Click “Choose file” if you’re uploading your ‘shop from your desktop

4. Alternatively, you can upload the ‘Shop to a free image hosting service. I suggest imgur. Then paste the image’s URL into the field that says “Image URL.” Note: this must be the URL of the image itself, not the page where it is displayed. That means the URL ends in .jpg, .gif, .png, whatever.

5. Add editorial commentary and hit submit and your image will load. If it doesn’t, upload the image to imgur and paste the image URL as a comment. I will look at it.

6. Large-size images may not upload properly, though we have seen some animated .gifs upwards of 5 MB. If you’re still having trouble uploading the image, try to keep its longest dimension (horizontal or vertical) under 1000 pixels, or the whole thing under 2 MB.

What Would Make Someone Plagiarize A Game Review?

Just what would make someone plagiarize a video game review? This week on Kotaku Splitscreen, let’s discuss.

Kotaku editor Maddy Myers joins me and Kirk to talk about the wild story of IGN editor Filip Miucin, who was fired this week after a YouTuber accused him of plagiarizing a Dead Cells review. Later, Kotaku discovered that Miucin had also previously plagiarized a NintendoLife review, before he started working at IGN.

We also talk about Dead Cells, what makes a good Metroidvania, the appeal of deleting your old tweets, EVO’s best storylines, and why you should watch Better Call Saul.

https://kinja.com/ajax/inset/iframe?id=megaphone-PPY7399459257

Get the MP3 here, or read an excerpt:

Jason: …So as we know, plagiarism is one of the worst sins one can commit in journalism, so it’s pretty wild. I think this is the first time I can remember this happening in the world of video game writing and reporting and critiquing. Maddy, I’m curious to hear your thoughts, what you make of this whole situation. Do you think this guy’s career is over?

Maddy: I think so. It’s hard for me to even imagine plagiarizing. It’s really tough for me. Just in my personal life, a friend had to fire someone at his job for plagiarizing something… When that happened, I was like, ‘Wow I’ve met her — she doesn’t seem like the type of person who would do that. What is the psychology behind even doing it?’ And I was really fascinated by it, and then this happened, so I’ve really just been thinking about it, and I know I’d never do it, but some people do, and why. It’s kind like the questions we ask about why do people troll other people? What makes people… do things?

Jason: I think with plagiarism, it’s more of an addiction, or a mental illness.

Maddy: Yeah! It’s sad, in my friend’s case, his co-worker was saying she just felt so overworked and she didn’t have enough time to really write the things she was supposed to be writing, and that was her excuse, and she had completely justified it to herself. That was wild to me.

Jason: Yeah, I think you just convince yourself that there’s nothing wrong with what you’re doing, that it’s OK. I saw some people theorizing that it was because he was in over his head at work, or felt overwhelmed.

Maddy: That is not what I would do if I was overwhelmed!

Jason: Not only that built the examples of him doing it before IGN also paint the picture of a pattern. Kirk what do you make of this?

Kirk: It’s a really interesting story on a number of levels. I have a few different thoughts. First of all I really feel for the editors at IGN — we know Tina [Amini] over there, who used to work with us, and just because this could very easily happen to us, it could happen to everybody. Our freelancers are great, but we could totally have someone who we had no idea lifted text from a YouTube video that none of us would ever have seen, and there’s no way to know or catch that, especially for a video, which isn’t written down anywhere. But also you trust your writers, you don’t check everything they write against the internet.

I don’t really understand the mentality either, and hesitate to guess too much about why this particular guy did it, but I’ve had similar thoughts to you Maddy in the past… [CNN’s] Fareed Zakaria, I remember being shocked by that, only because that guy is really successful. Clearly a good writer, and a really smart person. He’s bounced back, I think if you’re that established, I guess you can fuck up like that and stick around. But it still boggled the mind that you could be that well-known and still somehow think you could get away with this or think you’d even need to.

If you’re feeling overworked and you’re as famous, or even honestly in this case if you’re feeling overworked and you’re an editor at IGN, you’re doing fine, you can say, ‘I can’t write as much as I needed to,’ or something. I dunno. There’s something else going on there that I don’t totally understand.

One wrinkle of this and the fact that this was happening in video games is that a lot of the initial part of both reviews, there was all this cliched games jargon— “smooth gameplay.”

Jason: Fluid!

Kirk: Right, the kinds of things people say all the time. And I strive to avoid cliches, but I still do it, everyone does it, especially if you write thousands of articles. You repeat things, you use the same sort of language…

Maddy: I think that might be part of someone might self-justify that it’s OK, if you have a personality type where you’re able to do that sort of self-justification, you might be like, ‘Well people come up with similar ideas all the time, people are always using the same kinds of phrases in game reviews, no one would ever fault me for this.’

If you’re a bit overwhelmed, I’d start by checking out the Anker (hint: check out the refurbished Capsule projector for $221), Adidas, and Worx outlets, all of which offer a ton of selection and great prices, even before you factor in the promo code. Dyson is also included, and is perhaps the brand with the best eBay presence of all. Cuisinart 77-7 Chef’s Classic Stainless 7-Piece Cookware Set | $62 | Amazon | After $2 coupon
Image: Amazon

Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to buy a whole 14-piece cookware set when you know you only need to replace a few pans. This Cuisinart 7-piece set is a good middle ground, and comes with all the basics like a skillet, two sauce pans, and a stock pot.

These pieces feature aluminum cores in the bases, though that aluminum doesn’t extend up the sidewalls like you’d see in more expensive cookware. But still, they should heat up quickly and evenly, and boast a solid 4.2 stars with over 600 reviews.

15% off Sale | Thermoworks

If you haven’t bought one of our readers’ favorite meat thermometer, today is good day to change that. And while you’re over there, you might as well fill your cart with a bunch of other ThermoWorks stuff because everything is 15% off.

You can pick up the new Thermapen IR, smaller probe thermometer, a thermometer specially designed for meat smokers, this extra big, extra loud timer, or a whole bunch of highly-rated kitchen gadgets for the foodies in your life.

We don’t see sales like this very often, so head over to Thermoworks while the deals are still hot.

Summer isn’t over yet and if you think you’ll squeeze in a few more days at the pool this season, you should buy a 3-pack of these drink floaties. The swans, rainbows, and donuts are all only $5 for a 3-pack, so what are you waiting for?

Squatty Potty 7" | $20 | Amazon

Try not to panic, but you’re probably pooping all wrong. Luckily, there’s an easy solution: a Squatty Potty, either the 7" model or the 9" model, marked down to $20 today from the usual $25.

Squatty Potty is designed to lift your legs into an ideal bowel movement position, and according to Amazon reviewers at least, it really works. I can’t really overstate how popular this thing has been with our readers over the past year or so, so it’s time to purchase or get off the pot. Choose whichever model works best with the height of your toilet, but if you aren’t sure, the 7" tends to be the most popular.

It’s not like having a belt that doesn’t fit right is a huge issue, it’s a personal problem. But it’s really, really annoying. Ratchet belts are the answer to that small, but not insignificant problem, and Amazon has a bunch from ratchet belts discounted to just $9 each today when you use promo code JY63RPLU, which should work on every variety on the page. That’s a lot cheaper than similar belts we’ve seen, but they have great reviews, so at this price, why not give it a shot?

Also note that by default, the belts are sized for waists 37"-44", but if you need it smaller, there are instructions on how to cut it to size. The cut end will go inside the buckle, so it won’t be visible.

When these 3/4-sized Arcade1Up arcade cabinets first went on preorder for $299, we thought it was a mistake, since they were supposed to cost $399. At this point though, it seems clear that $299 is in fact what they now cost, but inventory is still limited, since they were out of stock for awhile.

Anyway, they’re all back now, and they’re still $299, so if you want one, now’s your chance.
